I worked at Target 1 as it came to be known, in the mid-60's,$1.25/hour. The Dayton Brothers would come in and peruse the operation. talking mainly to each other.
I hate to admit that we stole the giant cow from Polar Locker one night. Threw it in the back of a pickup. and drove around with it for a while all the way to N.E Mpls. They finally chained it down. Rosedale was a cornfield, lots of cows.
I also remember of huge gang fight in the vicinity of Snelling
and Hwy 36. There was only 1 Roseville cop on duty at night,
not much he could do. Must have been 100 guys. You could
always find a fight or two behind McDonalds or close by.
Good thing my Mom didn't know much of what I did.
Played golf at the short course north east corner of Snelling
and 36. Golf team practiced there free.
I remember it all very well.

Did Roadside have carhops on rollerskates like they did at Porky's? I don't remember.
Not by the time they closed for good.

I didn't know that Harold and Marie Slawik made their money from Midway Ford on University ave.
I wonder if the writer knows that Marie is personally responsible for that green bathroom-tiled monstrosity that's on the corner of Snelling and University. I guess Harold must have been the brains of the operation.
That was the Prom Center. For a while it was a site to hold meetings like class reunions, as well as conventions.

I remember Zayre's and United Stores well. My oldest sister had her wedding reception at Hafner's. There also was the 88 cent store, a bakery at one time and the drug store(the name escapes me right now)with the soda fountain. My mom grew up only about a block away from all of this. My grandpa used to take my sibs and me to the bakery every weekend to get an M&M cookie, the highlight of our weekend at grandparents house.
Only Zayre's I remember was the one that was on Central Ave in Columbia Heights. Didn't know of any other ones.

The Prom was owned by Harry Givens not Harold and Marie Slawik. I worked at the Prom in the coat check rooms(one was downstairs in the Arizona Room) and the main coat check room in the main ballroom around 1955 -1957. My mother worked at the Prom as a waitresses for almost forty years and my aunt Dorothy ran the popcorn stand at the Prom. I don't remember the original owners of the Prom they were from Chicago and they owned Turf Ballroom in Minneapolis and the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa and a ballroom in Chicago, the name is a blank now. Harry Givens was a great person to work for and he could play a mean piano. Harry's gift to my parents 50th wedding anniversary was use of the Arizona room for the evening as well as free open bar and dinner. When my aunt Dorthy passed away Harry Givens came to her funeral and he said to me "your aunt is making popcorn in heaven now". I thought that was so nice of him to say. Also Harry Givens shed tears as he watched the wrecking ball demolish the Prom. The Prom needed nearly a million dollars to upgrade as the St Paul Fire department required a sprinkler system be installed and also the roof needed to be refurbished, it leaked when it rained.

Wikipedia advises that the original owners of the Prom owned the "Terp" ballroom in Austin, Minnesota not the Turf as stated in my post. I think the ballroom in Chicago was called the Majestic Ballroom and the ballroom in Minneapolis, Minnesota was the Marigold Ballroom.

This should have been addressed to the one who posted about the owners.
.
Reason I knew about the Prom Center. Is that I was in it for a couple of events. Including meeting a British actor once. I also ate at the Applebees that was right by it.
