Turkey scraps flights to Armenia after Azeri resistance
ANKARA (Reuters)- Turkey has canceled the first ever scheduled Turkish flights to its long-time rival Armenia, days before the first plane was due to take off, officials have said, following fierce opposition from Turkey's ally and energy partner Azerbaijan.
The twice-weekly flights between Turkey's eastern city of Van and the Armenian capital Yerevan were due to begin on April 3 and, encouraged by a U.S. push for rapprochement, were meant to boost bilateral tourism and trade.
But with just over a week until the first flight, and with tickets already on sale, Turkey's civil aviation authority stepped in and ordered the flights to be suspended.
Officials at Turkey's transport ministry confirmed the flights had been stopped but declined to give a reason. BoraJet, the private Turkish carrier set to fly the 45-minute route, has also declined to comment on the stoppage.
One BoraJet official twice denied the Van-Yerevan flights had ever been planned, even though the route was still available as a booking option on the firm's website on Monday.
Narekavank Tour, a Yerevan-based travel agency which has spent the last three years organizing the flights together with a Turkish travel agency in Van, said the reason was political.
"The organizers were keen on staying away from politics. It is very sad and discouraging that Turkish authorities were not able to do the same and finally let politics interfere with this promising initiative," it said in a statement.
Asked if he thought this was due to specific pressure from Azerbaijan, Armen Hovhannisyan, co-founder of Narekavank Tour, said: "Of course, it's part of the whole formula, and maybe they have been working behind the scenes."

Armenian church in Turkey rings bell for first time in nearly 100 years
Despite no priest being available to hold a mass, worshipers gathered at the recently restored Surp Giragos Armenian Church in eastern Turkey on Easter Sunday to pray and listen to the church's bell ring out for the first time in 98 years. By Hürriyet Daily News (text) The Armenian community has rung the bells of Diyarbakır’s Surp Giragos Armenian Church for the first time in 98 years to celebrate the Easter holiday, but failed to hold a proper mass due to a lack of priests to take part, Doğan news ageny reported yesterday.
The church had been out of service for almost a century now, and was recently restored with a $3,200,000 budget before it was re-opened. The community visited the grounds yesterday, Easter Sunday. The bronze bell, which was built in Russia, was rung for the first time in almost a century.

Patriarch congratulates Armenian Catholicos on Easter
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia has congratulated leaders of Christian churches on Easter.
“Christians today face many challenges: murderous wars continue in a number of regions and attempts to oust Christian values from public life remain,” the patriarch’s message, posted on the Moscow patriarchy’s website on Monday, said, according to Interfax.
Patriarch Kirill said that regardless of how difficult the environment was, Christian leaders were “to conquer together the evil of “this world” inspired by the words of the Lord:“Take courage: I have overcome the world.”
The message was addressed to Roman Pontiff Francis, Armenian Catholicos Karekin II, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby of the Anglican Church, Chairman of the Evangelical Church Council in Germany Nikolaus Schneider and Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland Kari Makinen.
