IBM Moving Hundreds of Manufacturing Jobs to Mexico

Source: KTTC.COM

A shock for people working at IBM's sprawling campus in northwest Rochester Tuesday, as IBM executives shared a decision with workers that hundreds of manufacturing jobs are moving to Guadalajara, Mexico.

IBM is a global computer giant with twelve research laboratories around the world and manufacturing and support plants and offices in dozens of countries. In recent years, there have been other such "resource actions" with the company shifting jobs to China, India or other parts of its "smarter planet."

Scott Cook, an IBM spokesman based in Chicago, confirmed the Rochester cuts to KTTC NewsCenter and says the decisions announced Tuesday are simply about creating the "best possible infrastructure" for the company.

So pay in the US should lowered to Mexican rates?

This is what you get when you don't allow the free market to work. They find a way to get it done somewhere else.

Nope, while salaries do have some impact, the corporate tax structure in Mexico, along with the local tax structure is better for the future of IBM than it is in Rochester MN, USA. Global economy!!

That's odd. Mexican taxes have risen at a higher percentage than US taxes in recent years.

Right! But the US is still the higher and added to that the lower overhead in salaries, building, utilities! Taxes play a role, as do salaries, but you need to look at the big picture! I don't know if the workers in Rochester belong to a unoin, but that could be another factor!

They don't belong to a union, although membership would have enabled them to get a better severance package and more notice, no doubt.

Unions are for lazy halfass workers who would be fired at a real job. Like teachers.

Please ignore the bigoted racist Crassus. He will do or say anything to get attention. Crassus is just an esteem challenged middle school student with sexuality issues thrown in to boot.

Rumor has it that his middle school counselor is helping to get Crassus into therapy.

Crassus is at that early teen age when he dislikes his teachers.

I am not sure how you would know that seeing no notices have been sent out and no severances packages have been offered!

Never belonged to a Union but have always gotten some sort of severence.

Of course belonging to a Union WILL ensure you pay Union dues each pay period. Total up your Union dues and how's that for a severence package?

This is a shame, but it is what many companies have done in recent years, and will continue to do in the coming years.

How secure are you in your job situation?

I have been preaching on here about polishing up your job skills. Companies will continue to move jobs off shore to stay competitive. They also will continue to automate - especially with lower skilled manual labor type jobs.(That would be SEIU type jobs, folks.)

If you are in a labor intensive job, and you have not chosen to start getting trained in a high demand job skill, you are either an Obamabot or just plain stupid.

Obama's people actually came up with the idea of the sequester...

It's either bring Mexicans to Minnesota to work OR move companies to Mexico.

Which is best?

IBM decided to move to Mexico.
