The Lagoon So Beautiful It Had to Be Dyed Black
Former quarries often flood, creating swimming holes perfect for dangerous leaps off of cliffs and horsing around with friends. Unfortunately, they may also contain toxic residue from their industrial days.

In the case of the "blue lagoon" of Buxton in England, calcium oxide—used as part of the quarrying process—left the lagoon with a pH of 11.3.(For comparison, the pH of ammonia is 11.5. Bleach has a pH of 12.6.) The site was also used as a dumping ground. Signs leading up to the lagoon read:

"Warning! Polluted water lagoon known to contain: Car wrecks; Dead animals; Excrement; Rubbish," and:

"Warning! Do not enter water, due to high pH levels. This can cause: Skin and eye irritations; Stomach problems; Fungal infections such as thrush," and:

"Think! Would you swim in ammonia or bleach?"

Despite these dire warnings, however, the draw of the turquoise water—which resulted from limestone rocks leaching calcite crystals into the water—was simply too alluring. Families packed their swimsuits and drove to the picturesque lagoon for a splash and a giggle, telling children not to dunk their heads or swallow any water.

In June 2013, the council took the drastic measure of pouring black dye into the water to lessen its appeal. So far the plan seems to be working—according to locals, disappointed weekend road trippers have been turning back when they spot the newly inky lagoon.

Horse in McDonald's: Rider fined after 'drive-thru' refusal
A girl riding a pony also went through the McDonald's 'drive-thru' A woman has been fined for taking her horse into a McDonald's restaurant in Greater Manchester.

Police said the woman, who has not been named, was in the saddle when she was initially turned away from the drive-through kiosk on Bury New Road.

The woman then led the animal inside, where it "ended up doing his business on the floor", a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesman said.

McDonald's said it was unable to serve customers on horseback.

A girl riding a pony also went through the McDonald's 'drive-thru' with the woman.

'Distress to customers'

A spokeswoman for the company said: "On 20 July a woman allowed her pony to enter our restaurant in Whitefield after being refused service in the drive-thru lane.

A McDonald's spokeswoman said customers were distressed "The incident caused distress to customers and disruption for the restaurant, and the police issued the woman with a fixed penalty notice."

She added: "The health and safety of our customers and staff is our top priority, and for this reason we are unable to serve pedestrians, bicycle riders or customers on horseback through the drive-thru."

Greater Manchester Police said: "The sight and smell of this caused obvious distress and upset to customers trying to eat, as well as staff members.

"Officers arrived at the location and the woman was issued [with] a fixed penalty notice for causing alarm and distress to other customers and staff."

The girl is a idiot for one. But they should have served her in the drive-through & told her not to do this again, instead of causing this incident.

London Mayor's Radical Plan for Heathrow: Demolish It
London Mayor Boris Johnson wants to turn Heathrow Airport into a pile of rubble. No, he is not kidding.

Throwing fuel onto a heated debate over the future of Europe’s busiest airport, the Conservative mayor has called for an extreme solution: Raze Heathrow, redevelop the land as a residential community, and replace it with a new international air hub some 50 miles away on the other side of London.

Business leaders complain that London is losing its attractiveness as an international destination because the city’s airports have not been allowed to expand to meet growing demand. Rivals such as Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport, by contrast, have been growing. The Confederation of British Industry warned recently that Britain was missing out on potential new trade worth billions as it failed to add flights to fast-growing economies worldwide.

Johnson’s plan, though, has as much to do with politics as with business. Efforts to expand Heathrow have stalled for years over concerns about noise, pollution, and congestion. Heathrow flight paths take many planes over residential areas in west London represented in Parliament by the Conservative Party. The Conservatives’ coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats, fiercely oppose Heathrow expansion as well.

In the business community, it’s hard to find anyone who seems enthusiastic about getting rid of Heathrow. Building a new airport at Johnson’s preferred site—on the Thames estuary east of London—would take years and would cost, by his estimate, nearly £70 billion (almost $100 billion).

Those numbers “do not stack up well” against estimates by Heathrow’s owners, who say they could build a new runway for no more than £18 billion, says the Board of Airline Representatives in the UK, which represents 80 scheduled airlines. Heathrow now has two runways, and adding one more would provide sufficient capacity to meet demand at least until 2040, according to airport officials.

Moreover, Heathrow’s passenger rail links to central London make it “far easier to get to” than the proposed Thames estuary sites, the Institute of Directors, a group of British business executives, said in a recent statement.

Questions about Heathrow’s future are making headlines again as a government-appointed commission received recommendations last week on alternatives for increasing runway capacity in southeastern England. Prime Minister David Cameron has said that no decision will be made until after elections in 2015.

Now that London’s popular mayor has taken a stand, some business groups are opting to remain on the sidelines.“We want expansion,” says a spokeswoman for London First, a local business-advocacy group.“London is losing out by not taking any action.” But, she says,“We’ve deliberately stayed out of this.”
