GOP Needs Cold Shower, Obama Is Still the Favorite

MORNING MINDMELD: As an antidote to the (perhaps) irrational Republican exuberance that seems to have seized D.C., we pause for the following public-service announcement. To be President, you have to win states, not debates. And Mitt Romney has a problem. Despite a great debate and what The Wall Street Journal’s Neil King Jr. on Sunday called a polling “surge,” Romney has not put away a single one of the must-have states. President Obama remains the favorite because he only needs to win a couple of the toss-ups. Mitt needs to win most of them. A cold shower for the GOP: Most polling shows Romney trailing in Ohio, Wisconsin, Nevada, New Hampshire and Iowa – by MORE than Obama trails in North Carolina. Glenn Thrush and Jonathan Martin reminded of us of the 2008 primary analogy: Whatever else Hillary Clinton had, Barack Obama had the math. And math, not momentum, gets you the big house, the bulletproof car, the cool plane. We now resume our regularly scheduled Playbook.

--Diane Sawyer last night on ABC's "World News," on the latest ABC-WP tracking poll:“This razor-thin race got even closer. Every night we’re going to bring you a brand new ABC News-Washington Post poll. And tonight, the candidates are separated -- look at this -- just seven-hundreths of 1 percent [Romney 49, Obama 48]. That's about 91,000 people, out of an estimated 140 million voters.”

FIRST LOOK: American Crossroads features Clint Eastwood (sans chair) in an ad going up today in seven states -- Colo., Fla., Iowa, Nev., N.H. Ohio and Virginia. You hear his voice, but don’t see his face until the end:“In the last few years, America has been knocked down. 23 million can’t find full-time work. And we borrow $4 billion every single day, much of it from China. If someone doesn’t get the job done, you gotta hold ’em accountable. Obama’s second term would be a rerun of the first an our country couldn’t survive that. We need someone who can turn it around fast, and that man is Mitt Romney. There’s not much time left, and the future of our country is at stake.”

--The ad was taped at Eastwood’s house in California. A Crossroads official emails: Crossroads President and CEO Steven Law “was at the convention and saw the powerful things Clint said … and how well they were received by the crowd [despite] the obsessive media coverage afterward.… We got an introduction to him, and he agreed to do the spot.…

“This is not a stock celebrity endorsement spot (‘I'm so and so and I'm voting for Mitt Romney.’) No one cares about those. This is Clint adding his iconic weight to a message about the country that already resonates with people, and which they already believe in their hearts. He tells a story about America, and it's revealed at the end who's telling the story. It tested off the charts in focus groups in Florida and Ohio.”

--The Eastwood spot is part of a $12.6 million Crossroads buy that includes two other spots:“Survive,” about small business owners not trusting Obama (Colo., Iowa, Ohio, Va.) http://bit.ly/Rgq9au ...“Bow,” on Obama’s record on China (Fla., Nev., N.H., Ohio and Va.) http://bit.ly/QW10hy

--This is in addition to the Crossroads GPS $4.2m buy in Ohio and Wisconsin, first reported by POLITICO yesterday, on a new ad,“Mitt and David,” featuring Ted and Pat Oparowski, whose son Romney helped while he was battling cancer in the 1970s. http://bit.ly/RjKzxx
