Penn Health System to stop hiring smokers

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

The system, which includes the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, said the policy would improve the health of its workforce and reduce the cost of health-care benefits.

A job applicant must be tobacco-free for six months. New employees, including doctors, who are caught lying about their tobacco use may be fired.

Current employees are not subject to the prohibition, but they already pay a higher premium on their health-care benefits if they are tobacco users and are not participating in free antitobacco programs offered by the system.

In 2012, about 11 percent of employees who were part of the system's health-insurance program declared themselves as tobacco users. Their surcharge is $15 every two weeks.

Nice. Hopefully we can start charging stupid people more for their health care as well. Then we charge more for people that work in dangerous jobs, like police and firefighters, and miners, and postal carriers. Then we can start charging more to people who drink more than a glass of wine a month, and people that leave their house occasionally to drive their car.

All these activities are inherently dangerous and lead to higher health care costs.

Yeah, Obamacare is going to be a boon to the insurers and government, it is everyone else that gets the shaft.

Sorry to disappoint slewsie. Haven't had a cigarrette in 20 years. If you can't see the problems that discrimination brings on, not hiring people because they smoke, you can't see the logical conclusion. So today it is ok to discriminate against two groups of people in hiring decisions, smokers and white males. Next it will be the overweight, and on and on.....

Sorry to disappoint, but you make so little sense that most of the posters, even those on the same side of the issue as you, simply ignore your posts. I just feel like a little sparring today, although I am already thinking I need a shower again after answering your posts. Amazing that you talk out of both sides of your mouth and your ass on a daily basis. Too bad that silly hospital union won't stand up against discrimination. Fatties are next to be excluded from hire. Then the ones with expensive pre-existing conditions. You know, diabetes, Crohns', lupus, MS, Muscular Dystrophy. You can't discriminate against anyone in the health plan, so you simply don't hire those with pre-existing conditions. Way to go Obamacare.

First they came for the Smokers,
and I didnít speak up,
because I wasnít a smoker.
Then they came for the Fatties,
and I didnít speak up,
because I wasnít obese.
Then they came for the Imbibers,
and I didnít speak up,
because I don't drink.
Then they came for the Infirmed,
and I didnít speak up,
because I was a healthy.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.

Predicting the future and perverting/misquoting a decent passage ???

Of course, you're against UNIONS, right ??

"First They Came for the Jews"
By Pastor Niemoller
"The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities." - Ayn Rand
First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Why even try and talk to the low information, no integrity, slewhili speaking dojo cleaner?(and self proclaimed master of the comma) Not that your posts aren't entertaining. I think since addiction it considered a disease and smokers are indeed addicted to nicotine, they need to unite and create their own protected class. Send lawyers guns and money.

So now the low income, that smoke at a higher rate than the general population, will have an even harder time finding jobs. Not enough strikes against them that they have limited knowledge and skills, now they have to pass a smoking exam as well to get hired.

I don't hate anyone, not even the slewches among us. It is the Democrats that hate the poor, by giving them a sub-standard living and not making them work for what they earn. Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he can feed his family.

If anyone hates the poor, it is the group that attempts to reward the poor for doing nothing, reinforcing that you don't have to do anything for yourself, someone else will do it for you. Making the poor less employable by making discrimination against smokers in hiring OK just pushes them farther onto the public dole with less chance to get out.
