Petition by Robert B. Reich

To be delivered to The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama
It's time for higher taxes on the super-rich to pay for what America needs.
There are currently 41,191 signatures. NEW goal - We need 50,000 signatures!
Petition Background
It's tax time again, when our minds turn toward paying the taxes we owe, or possibly getting a refund. But what we don't think of enough is whether our tax system is fair.

The richest 1% of Americans are now getting the largest percentage of total national income in almost a century. But many millionaires pay a lower federal tax rate than many middle class Americans. Some don't pay any federal taxes at all.

That's because of deductions for things like mortgages on large homes, business entertainment, and gold-plated health care plans. It's because of tax loopholes like offshore tax havens and capital gains loopholes. The situation is even more lopsided with the Social Security tax, which doesn't apply to income greater than $117,000. You can see why Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.

And Republicans want to lower taxes for the wealthy even more! When the rich pay low taxes, everyone else has to foot the bill--or important programs and services get cut. It's time to change that.

You are a fool and a stooge for the moocher class.

According to the Huffington Post, the top 1% pay 30% of all taxes. And the top 20% pay over 70% of all taxes.

The bottom 20% pay nothing and even receive payments as a result of the redistribution programs in the tax code.

Maybe what gibby is really trying to say is that the rich should get a pay cut in order to be paying their fair share... and how dare you quote a liberal rag like the HP!

And, I believe that the true 1%ers tax rate is closer to 35%.

When you look at the fact that for every taxpayer working full time, there are 1.7 people getting at least some type of government check/handout, I can see that we certainly need more cash to pay for it all...

Griddy, though probably unaware of it, has made a most compelling argument for a flat tax. No deductions, no exemptions, no level of income exempt.

And like most democrats, Griddy fails to recognize that most everyone in Congress is either a member of the top 1 or 2 percent, or fall in to that top 20% category. And none of them has the guts or the backing to make the necessary changes to resolve that issue.(thereby canceling their own gravy time) So while the middle class pays roughly 40% of their income in various taxes, that upper 20% pay much less (percentage of income-wise) and that bottom 20% pay almost nothing as well.

Finally, our number one fiscal problem is all too obvious. We spend far too much money on far too much CRAP!!
You know, things like corporate welfare, unnecessary wars, foreign aid to countries who don't need it, welfare to those who don't really need it and are just milking a broken system, welfare for illegal aliens, and on and on and on.

What all you right wing extremists fail to mention is that the tax rate for the top 1% has steadily declined in the last half century while deductions have increased.

Tell me how that capital gains tax works for you.

The 1% need to start paying their fair share. Their percent of the total wealth in the US is steadily increasing at the expense of the middle and lower classes.

How much does the bottom 20% pay? NOTHING! Irish was right. You are a fool and a stooge.

Could that be because the 1% have already taken everything from the poor?

The poor pay a larger percent of their income in taxes anyway.

Well, I would hope so. What you are missing is the shrinking middle class. Obama's 1%er buddies are laughing all the way to the bank.

I agree with you but it will be hard because the Koch and Adelson have bought off the republican party and the Supreme court.

Easy! It is in the tax code what rate you pay! Problem is the tax code is so complex no one can understand it (designed that way so the boys that wrote the law (and their cronies) can take advatage of it!!

The 1% are milking the rest of us middle class people more than the poor. They control all the wealth and are not about to share it with anyone.
