A group of White Bear Lake lakeshore owners are sueing the Minnesota DNR for allowing the lake's level to go lower than normal.

They claim the number of new wells in the surrounding area is causing the lakes aquafer to lower and the lake level to follow.

There is no basis for their contention because in the 1950s and '60s the government used to operate 3 high volume well pumps with 8" caseings to keep White Bear full of water. Remember in the 1950s and '60s there were none of the recent wells in the area and the lake level was trending lower back then.

If you want to keep White Bear full of water you need to somehow put water into the lake!

It's all about the pumps!!

They used to pump White Bear full with 3 or 4 large pumps. Once they stopped doing that the lake has declined.

The dried lake bed should be given to the Hmong so they can grow crops to sell at the Farmers Market. Diversity matters and the Hmong people are our friends. They came all the way from the hills of Laos.
Now there's a good idea. Those lakehome owners would love to keep paying $20,000 a year property taxes so they can watch Hmong tend their gardens.

IMHO, their in one solution to keeping her full. Pump river water from the Saint Croix OR Mississippi into White Bear Lake. The closest river water is in Pleasant Lake in North Oaks that lake is backfilled from the Mississippi River. It would need to be pumped from the Sucker Creek to White Bear Lake, not that far as the crow flies, maybe 3 miles.

Using river water would be acceptable to environmentalists and the DNR because it involves keeping river water upstream instead of letting it flow into the ocean.

Better than pumping water from the groundwater supply into the lake to have it once again flow into the ground and evaporate.

During the spring runoff there is plenty of water from the Mississippi to fill the lake for the summer. In dry years the lake might need to be lower without river water but most years there is plenty of water in spring.

Only downside is the quality of river water might be lower BUT that water is used as drinking water by Saint Paul so it can't be too bad. A little electricity would be needed but a windmill can be built for that.

Thanks, living near White Bear and realizing how kids from all over use the lake makes it worth keeping up. I recall swimming in what is now the Ramsey County beach and playing in the cold pump water that used to be added to retain its depth. Once the 3 pumps were turned off and a dry spell came in the lake level dropped. How far it will drop is anybodies guess but it's NOT from residential and commercial wells recently installed.

More recently we were fishing and a lightning storm came up and we were far from the public access and a lakefront owner waved us to shore at his dock to avoid lightning, it's a friendly lake with good people.

The DNR needs to get on with it and get the water flowing into White Bear Lake NOW. NOT next year or after a 5 year study.

Oh, look, a jealous little pipsqueak troll pretending to know anything about me.
I don't care enough about Topix to change names, take the user name of others, or waste more than a few minutes a day reading the garbage that you and your moronic peers post non-stop all day and night because you have no job or life.
