Gander Mountain will open a "Firearms Super Center" in Rogers later this month, the first time it has rolled out the concept in Minnesota, the company said Friday, April 5.

The St. Paul-based outdoor goods chain already has 11 Gander Mountain locations across the state -- all of which sell guns -- but its store in the western Twin Cities suburb will have strictly a firearms emphasis. The company boasts it is "the nation's leading firearms retailer."

The 30,000-square-foot Rogers location -- formerly a Best Buy -- will have its official grand opening in May.

"The new Firearms Super Center concentrates on firearms, ammunition, hunting and tactical clothing," said Steve Uline, Gander Mountain's executive vice president of marketing.

In the past few years, Gander Mountain has significantly expanded its firearm offerings, both at its remodeled big-box stores and with its new Firearms Super Centers. The company said the store was planned well before the gun debate exploded nationwide after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

"We debuted this concept in Germantown, Wis., in November 2011, so this is not necessarily a new thing nationwide, but it's new to Minnesota, and there's no real correlation to current events," said Jess Myers, a spokesman for Gander Mountain.

Nevertheless, Uline cited three factors that are fueling firearm and ammunition sales.

"We're all seeing a high demand for firearms and ammunition, and it's driven by the political
environment," he said. There's also a strong interest "driven by home defense," Uline said, as well as the growing popularity of "shooting for enjoyment" at shooting ranges.
Rogers is already home to a rival Cabela's store, but the location along I-94 was nevertheless attractive, Uline said.

"It's kind of like the last stopping spot as everyone heads north, so it's a high traffic location for the hunting community," he said.

On Friday, Gander Mountain also expanded its "Responsibility Pledge," asking gun owners to pledge to secure their firearms and keep them from "the underaged, untrained and unauthorized."

The company set up a website, responsibilitypledge.com , with the headline: "With rights comes responsibility."

Many things are dangerous in the hands of liberals, just look at all the mass shootings; Liberals or KKK (founded by liberals)

---Maybe we should outlaw liberalism then

This is a good business move by Gander Mountain. That former Best Buy location is quite close to a Cabela's store.

Although I usually ignore your posts because they are mostly off-topic, I have to ask, why are you writing "START" in your reference to Gander Mountain? The only place I have seen this word used on this thread is on your posts.

GEE, you'd "think" if this was a good idea, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN POLICY FROM THE START, dip wad !!!
Are you saying Gander Mountain was encouraging the illegal use of their products? Using your logic, if corporations don't "START" something immediately after incorporating then they shoyldn't "START" anything at all. Now I'm sorry I even responded.

Since the Brady's didn't "START" advocating for gun control until after Reagan was shot, they shouldn't have "STARTED" at all.

Huh? Are you saying that Gander Mountain was UNCONCIOUS while they were making a profit?

If anybody here is unconcious, it is you.

The Spell Check cannot correct misused words. Please be kind to Slewsie and ignore what she types when it cannot be corrected with her favorite toy on the Ward, Spell Checker.

You said Gander Mountain was profiting without a concious. How is that possible? You are working with a limited vocabulary and you have written a lot of words on these threads with your limited vocabulary however most of it it off topic and nonsensical.
