Man's blown off finger hits his mother

DES MOINES, Iowa -
A man shot off his own finger while cleaning his gun Sunday evening.

Steven Johnson, 22, said when he finished cleaning the gun at home when he inserted the magazine into the gun and racked the slide.

He said he did not realize the gun was loaded and pulled the trigger to see if the weapon was working.

"The tip of his finger flew off and hit his mother," according to a police report.

Johnson's mother drove him to the hospital, where police were summoned. The report said Johnson's story checked out.

The report did not indicate if doctors were able to reattach the tip of Johnson's left index finger.

The gun, the report said, was a Tarus .380.

Never assume a gun is unloaded. That being said, how do you shoot off your finger if your gun is in pieces on a table being cleaned?
