New York State Assembly passes $9 minimum wage

Source: AP

ALBANY, N.Y.-- New York's Assembly has voted to increase the minimum wage to $9 an hour with automatic increases tied to inflation, putting pressure on Senate's Republicans who are seeking business tax cuts in a potential legislative deal.

The Assembly passed the bill 101-44 after four hours of debate Tuesday night. The bill now goes to the Senate.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Senate majority leaders are negotiating behind closed doors.

The minimum wage is currently $7.25 an hour. Among the proposals being floated by legislative leaders is raising the wage to $8.50, then $8.75, then $9 over two or three years.

Wonder how much in additional tax revenues this will generate for the state?
Oh! You thought they want to do this to help the poor workers? Think again.

What a boob. Your statement is totally false and not backed up with any credible facts.

Those were questions, not statements. But this is a statement. Politicians rarely if ever do anything to benefit anyone but themselves. Please play again.

OK here some facts,$7.25/Hour =$15,080 earning per year.$9.00/hour =$18,720 earnings per year. The Government just increased it's potential revenue pool by $3,640. Perhaps not at the Federal level, because I doubt someone earning less than $20,000 a year pays the Fed. But State income taxes will be helped.
Now, do you think the companies paying these additional higher wages are going to absorb them? My guess, no. These additional cost will be passed on the consumers in the form of higher prices for services rendered, beit at fast food counters or janitorial services! Added to this, the additional taxation brought on by the Affordable Health Care Act, many companies will simply cut back on employees to reduce the impact on their profit structure. Why? because many have covenants with their banks and or investors and have to maintain a certain level of profitablity in order to maintain either or both.

OK, so now you bump every entry level worker up to $9/hour. I would venture to guess that there already is a large number of workers already making $9/hour.

What do you do with them?

And, how do you, as a small business owner, address the additional expense?

High school kids already have a hard time finding any type of job here in Minnesota. There are dozens of applications for any entry level part time job.

A lot of union contracts are written with a tiered wage scale based on percentages above the minimum wage.

If your base rate is to be 215% of the minimum wage, you just got a $1.61 per hour wage increase, with another 54 cents per hour next year, and an additional 54 cents per hour the following year.

Will this impact low income workers? Sure as hell will.

Their wages will go up and their opportunities for employment just went down.
