Lax Gun Laws Kill

Buffalo, NY

One of the often heard refrains sung by the pro-gun choirs is that guns don’t kill people; people kill people. But as we all know, it’s not true – as a tragic accident in a south-side thrift store in Chicago proved that guns do indeed kill people: A bag of clothing dropped off at a thrift store in the South Side Washington Heights neighborhood had a deadly surprise hidden in one of the socks: a gun.

Two co-workers were sifting through the dropped-off clothing in the back room of the store in the 9400 block of South Ashland Avenue on Friday morning. When Maria Carmen Dominguez’s male co-worker shook out a sock, a .22 caliber handgun fell out and discharged, striking her in the chest.

Dominguez was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The medical examiner’s office pronounced her dead at 10:47 a.m.

Ms. Dominguez was survived by her husband and two children, an adult son and a daughter in high school. She is also survived by the fact that she will become yet another statistic; one of the many, many gun deaths in the United States this year – enough to be declared a public health crisis. As said in another article on accidental shootings, there are a number of rules regarding the safe handling of a gun. Sticking loaded firearms inside of a sock is certainly not among them.

Sadly, as the NRA will likely point out, if there had just been a good guy with a gun, they might have been able to shoot the rogue sock before it killed Ms. Dominguez.
