San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss says he's 'the greatest receiver ever to play' in NFL
Moss' 15,292 receiving yards rank him third in league history, quite a ways behind Jerry Rice (22,895). His 156 receiving TDs rank him second, but he’s a long way behind Rice there, too (197).

NEW ORLEANS -- Randy Moss has had an amazing and sometimes turbulent 14-year career in the NFL. And as far as he’s concerned, no receiver has ever had a better one.

On the heels of a 28-catch season, Moss labeled himself “the greatest receiver” during his remarkably engaging appearance at Super Bowl Media Day on Tuesday. He admitted his last two seasons have been far from his best, but as he looks back on his first 12 NFL seasons he said “I do think I’m the greatest receiver to ever do it.”

"I don't really live on numbers," Moss said. "I really live on impact and what you're able to do out on that field. So I really do think I'm the greatest receiver ever to play this game."

It’s a good thing Moss doesn’t “live on numbers” because the numbers don’t really support his claim. His 15,292 receiving yards rank him third in league history, quite a ways behind Jerry Rice (22,895). His 156 receiving touchdowns rank him second, but he’s a long way behind Rice there, too (197).

So while Moss is clearly one of the best ever, it’s hard to argue that Rice isn’t really the best ever.

“Put my numbers up against his numbers,” Rice said, via ESPN.

Moss does still have a chance to close the gap on Rice, though. He said he wants to come back and play at least one more year

If his last five years were statistically the same as his first five years, then Randy Moss could make his claim and there would be some credibility to his claim. As it is, he is simply a better than average receiver. He never led his team to a Super Bowl victory. Even if the 49ers win, he likely will not be able to make that claim for this season either.

Do you have Moss 2nd after Jerry Rice or do you just not like him, the Super Bowl arguement is always B.S. in every football arguement and he was the leading reciever on the 2 highests scoring teams in NFL history.

His statement is over inflated, like his ego.

Statistics don't tell the whole story of Randy Moss. In his case, he got gaudy statistics, but when it came down to it, he was a jerk to his team mates and the ownership, management, and coaching staff to his teams. I thought it was a good idea for the Vikings to get Randy Moss in 2010. Apparently, Randy Moss did not agree. It is up to others to declare a player's greatness, not the player himself.

Red McCombs was a used car salesman. I'm sorry if he hurt your feelings, football isn't for sissies... maybe you can watch soccer?

I don't often get called a leftist. Sissy maybe, but not leftist.(I'm 6'3" 240 lbs., so I don't get called a sissy often either.)

I just don't think Randy Moss ultimately lived up to his statistics. I think he got a raw deal on the 'I play when I wanna play' thing. I also think he's an immature jerk who never turned his 'greatness' into much beyond gaudy statistics.

Randy Moss is a worthless Jigger. You are the only Jigger lover in the Junction. You must live in the trailer park on Idaho and Southern.

Randy Moss is a piece of chit. Yes, he had the physical ability, but his stupid brain oversized ego, and lack of understanding of the "team" concept kept him from being perhaps, the greatest wide receiver of all time. Jerry Rice was FAR better, in ALL areas, blocking, running routes, attitude, SELF-DISCIPLINE, avoiding injuries, and putting points on the BOARD.

Moss threw away a great career. I would be happy to see him NEVER to wear a Super Bowl ring, although I would rather see SF win instead of the thuggish Ravens. Ray whatshisname can gotohell. One thing is for sure. Moss won't get into the Hall of Fame.
