THE FBI NEEDS TO PERFORM A COMPLETE INVESTIGATION OF THE RED LAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT. THERE IS NO REASON THEY SHOULD HAVE KILLED THIS MAN. AT THE MOST, WHY COULDN'T THEY WOUND HIM IN THE LEG TO WHERE HE COULDN'T CONTINUE TOWARDS THE OFFICERS. INSTEAD, THEY KILLED HIM. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS. HOPEFULLY SOONER THAN LATER.

Red Lake should require its officers to be POST-certified by the state, like White Earth does. The department has lost a lot of respect among professional law enforcement officers since the tribal council kicked out the well-respected BIA police force in the 1990s.

POST-certified by the state huh? What would any normal reasonable person do if confronted by a prison parolee who has just shot at a car with a baby in it, and who was knife wielding and charging in close quarters, what would you do, shoot him in the leg? Not me, lemme tell ya. POST certified? By the state? Not the state of minnesota for crying out loud. And here i thought the people of the state of minnesota wanted nothing to do with Red Lake. Maybe someone should ask Red Lake if they want their officers to be state certified. I wonder what their answer would be, or if they would dignify it. And I don't recall a 'BIA' police force in Red Lake in the 1990's that was well respected; maybe that was why they were asked to leave? I fail to see the rationale in the saying, we the state of minnesota want nothing to do with you, but by the way, we want it to be mandatory that we certify your police officers.

The red Lake cops are cowboys. All POST-certified means is they have been properly trained and have something to lose besides their jobs -- their professional credentials.

OK, maybe that was a poor choice of words. But you know what I mean -- gung-ho, sometimes overly enthusiastic, like using their squad cars to ram suspects off the road rather than deploying stop sticks. That kind of thing.

Look at the facts of the case which I do not know and see what you would have done under the same facts. Police Officers every where are not trained to shoot someone in the leg, this is true for States, Federal or Indian Police Academy's.

Most Police Officers take on the the job because they want to Protect and Serve in the community and it is a very Tuff Job wearing the badge and upholding the laws of the Tribal Nation, State or Federal Government. Police Officers do not look forward to the taking of human life but they are placed in that action at times.

Being a cop is not easy, you are always in the public eye and never right because you can never please everyone and people are always being a monday night quarter back.

I invite anyone to get with their local Police Department and check on being a visitor for the ride along program. This may open your eye to what cops, detention officers and dispatchers deal with on a daily basis. Law Enforcement deals with people when they are at their worst in life not when they are all nice and respectful.

I trust a investigation will point out all the facts of the case and decide if the shooting was justified by the officer or not. Again the report will not please everyone, some people will not like it and others will.

I agree wholeheartely, We are not trained and it is not an area that is very easy to shoot anyway. You are taught to shoot to stop and the area that is aimed at is the chest, nowhere else. No state or federal academy will tell you different.

They did what they are suppose to do!

I'm not too sure where the Detroit Lakes "concerned" citizen is coming from - or what they do for a living - but I'll take a guess that he's a cop. As am I - however, I have been trained by both the BIA (FLETC in New Mexico) and by MN State Acedemy - Hibbing. I am POST certified as well. I also worked in Red Lake. Unfortunately your rhetoric is an all-too-familiar bowl of jargon from someone who has yet to branch out of your home area. The BIA/Federal Law Enforcement Training is as good if not exceeds (in some areas) the State training we get. No self-respecting officer would go beyond our training - state, federal or cracker jack and give warning shots. Should you think that such is mandated or blessed by MN POST, check the Rules and Statutes for POST and Legislation for Deadly Force - then you may start spewing your verbiage.

How can any of you judge what these people have been through? They and their families are constantly targeted for ridicule and violence, even their small children. Their homes have been shot at because they are officers of the law.
Yes, they made the decision to serve and protect, but who protects them?
If faced with a gunman, they are trained not to shoot to hurt, but have to assume that this person is using deadly force, they are trained to shoot to kill, I'm sorry but it is a fact in all law enforcement. I know Red Lake is a small community, but even these officers are trained to do such.
These are the same officers that were the 1st on the scene when Jeff Wiese went on his rampage. They were required to go through months of therapy afterwards to deal with not only what they saw but the whole incident.
Im sure you know the adage of walking in another's shoes. Don't judge by what the media feeds you.
I feel for the family that lost a loved one, but I can tell you, retaliation only kills more good natives. This isn't something that we can afford.

I agree, with Nativebabe. As a former victim of violent crime I learned there are some people who want nothing except to harm or kill their victims for their own selfish purposes. You can't stand around scratching your ear wondering if and how to stop them without offending them, hurting them, or even possibly killing them. They will kill you while you pause.

It is always sad when a life is lost but the person chose a life of crime and no society can tolerate rampant crime and chaos without sacrificing the lives of innocents. The Police Officer deserves support and trust unless and until proven otherwise. The FBI has a process in place to investigate fairly and bring out the truth. I leave it to them to do so. My place is to commend the Officer for his bravery and his wife and children for their sacrifice of being subjected to violence both in the past and now as a result of this incident.

I find it shameful they need be further harrassed by uninformed and/or criminal-sypathetic individuals who use this kind of forum with no respect for their situation and their desire to defend their community from crime.

If you're sitting around safely reading this post, thank a Police Officer!

If I am not mistaken doesn't it say something on the Red Lake website that they are the only tribe to not agree with allowing judicial powers to be outside of the tribe? Basically being in complete control of their own people? This is a tragedy, and what is sad is that it could be completely controlled by insiders themselves by the powers that the tribe gave themselves. Somebody correct me if I am mistaken.
