to folks who have lived here a long time (I recently moved down here from the Iron Range) has the crime always been this bad here? Or is it a relatively new thing? I am aware of the moniker "murderapolis" given to the city in the 80s I believe. It seems like the crime comes in waves. Is that an accurate obervation?

THERE ARE NO GANGS OUT EAST. MARYLAND,WASHINGTON D.C. SO WHY HERE IN MINNESOTA? GANGS ARE A BUNCH OF COWARDS HIDING BEHIND EACH OTHER. PEOPLE WHO WITHOUT FOLLOWERS WOULD BE TO SCARED TO DO ANYTHING ALONE. IF A YOUNG PERSON DOES NOT HAVE ANYONE TO LOOK UP TO OR RESPECT THEY FIND A GANG. IF THERE ARE FATHERS,UNCLES BROTHERS DOING GOOD IN LIFE THEY CAN CRAB THESE KIDS BEFORE THEY GET IN A GANG.SOME OF THESE KIDS ARE LOOKING FOR FAMILY AND TO BE EXCEPTRD ANYEHERE THEY CAN FIT IN.TO DIE OVER WEARING RED OR BLUE IS CRAZY AND THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IN MINNESOTA.

They just put what ... 70 or 80 more police on the street in Minneapolis. No..they can't be everywhere but Lake and Portland is a hot spot. Why aren't the police getting out of the cars and walking the business district making their presence known. Talking to the business owners and people on the street. When was the last time you saw them actually communicating with the public instead of racing to a crime scene. Intervention is what is needed and that means interaction with the people in the area. More officers driving around in cars is not the answer. There is such a distrust of the police in this area anyway that when something is brewing..who will call them. Unless they start to build some trust that they are really there to help and not harass, people will hesitate to call them even when they see trouble building.

As someone who lives in this neighborhood, I don't appreciate "Murderapolis" comments from those of you who don't even know what you're talking about. All major cities have some crime. It's part of living in a city. Just like being a pompous jerk and criticizing those who live in the city is part of living in certain suburbs.
Kacy, sorry to disappoint, but Mayor Rybak and the MPLS council is too busy debating their smug proposal about using ceramic cups vs. paper (more environmentally friendly and all) and how biodegradable the toilet paper they use is to deal with the daily muggings, assaults, shootings and murder happening in the city.

The problem is it is hard to punish a child. Kids need the discipline that we grew up with!!! At least we where put in line. Kids run the world instead of the adults.

No he was not any of those things you named. He was a great guy everyone loved him. He was there at the wrong time. I am happy that I shared this painful story.
