On behalf of all Packer fans I'd like to thank Rick Spielman for selecting a 4th round talent QB w/ pick number 12! T. Jax has never looked better! Enjoy your time in the cellar of the NFC North while you wait for this bust to play out.
Sincerely,

Really. Nothing personal against Ponder, but BOOOOOOOOOO!
Now you have Joe Webb wondering what is going on.
You haven't addressed the offensive line which is your biggest weakness.
And the rest of the team is getting old. It's going to be a long time before they are poised for a run.
And tell me HOW Bryant McKinnie keeps a job over there? He spends so much time in nightclubs, he should own one.

The only team dumber than the Vikes are the Tennesse Titans. Could have gotten a legit number one draft pick and still get their lame qb later.
Heck, theres a slew of much better qbs coming out of the Pac 12 next year and they wouldnt have had to waste a top first round pick to get one!

TERRIBLE PICK!!!!!!!! Would have and should have picked offensive line help like Pouncey or Castano so they could RUN the ball!!!!!!! Joe Webb is just as good as this reach, what a waste of a number 12 pick! Just goes to show what happens when you have your mind set with a narrow vision!!!!!!!!!!

Guys we still have to have a good backup QB also, both guys are have great upside. To take Ponder at 12 is questionable but consider the situation, now at pick 43 lets see what they do. That OL is really in need of an upgrade now. should Ponder win the job,you have Joe to come in and keep it going. I'm basing this on what i saw last year. He can only get better. Should Joe win the job you have Ponder to continue growing and one day become the starter because like it or not , we're tied at the hip with him now. Based on that alone i would do all i can to protect him and get him targets the throw to.

I don't see how anyone could possibly justify drafting Ponder at 12. Yes he is better than anything we have on our roster, but if we drafted Weber in the 7th round he would be 10 times better than anything we have. The point is that his value was in the early second round at the very best. You just can't reach that far for a QB. Now his success will make or break the decision makers careers, which means they are going to stay with him way too long. I couldn't care less if he has two masters degrees and has a sparkling personality! It's what you do on the field! I saw him play a number of times, and saw nothing more than a servicable backup.
I still can't believe we passed on Aaron Rodgers twice because people actually thought Culpepper was good!!!! He was good at putting up fantasy numbers in the second half after his fumbles and interceptions put us in a huge hole.

Ponder is a much better pick than Gabbert or Newton who have no idea how to play in a pro style offense. Newton does not know how to call a play and both Newton and Gabbert are strickly throwers not passers. Ponder looks a lot like Drew Breez, love the pick, go Vikings!

Last night, ESPN compared him to (wait for it)...Chad Pennington - the same Chad Pennington whose timid shoulders have been fixed three times and whose arm can only throw the football 10 yards downfield.

Maybe its just me, but after I read all the draft reports on QBs, the only two that impressed me were Dalton from TCU and Kaepernick from Nevada. It's hard to argue with a QB that went 42-7 at TCU, and upset the Badgers, 21-19, in last year's Rose Bowl. He had a 66% completion percentage. Then, there's Kaepernick, who is the only QB in NCAA History to throw 10,000 yards and rush for 4,000 yards. That kind of production, albeit not against elite teams, should have still put him next to Cam Newton as the most dynamic athletic QB in this year's draft. After all, it was 19th ranked Nevada that defeated 3rd ranked Boise State last year 34-31. What has Ponder really done at Florida State???

Last year the ACC had a down year. Sure, he beat Florida, but Florida had a down year. They had two really bad losses to North Carolina and North Carolina State, and also lost to Oklahoma during the post-Sam Bradford era last year.

It wasn't Rick Spielman who drafted Ponder last night, it was the evil KAhn man dressed up like him.

It was a T-puppy pick on NFL night.

Wow, I love all the keyboard "experts" on here. Oh, and of course the Green Bay Butt-Packers fans on here that brag and brag after last years success. How quickly they forget about the 3 failed year's prior to that. Oh well...

Anyways, I agree w/ most people on here that I thought they were going to address an OL, DL, or secondary need w/ lots of talent at all those positions, but they took what they needed and who they projected as the best available QB. Chances are that Washington was doing what we wanted to do and was going to nab the guy we wanted so he was not going to be there later on. Please dont judge a pick till you see how he develops and plays in the NFL. The year Tom Brady was drafted, if he had been taken in even the 2nd or 3rd round people would have critisized the pick. In hindsight he should have went number 1 that year.

Also, to all the people saying that this is great since we can have Andrew Luck now that we are going to suck, you do realise that similiar things were said last year about Locker being #1 this year right? It's amazing how all this supreme talent that will be ready next year suddenly falls away after another year of college football. Luck may suck this year. He may get hurt. Remember, most people had Ponder at the top of their QB boards last year before the college season, and the only reason he fell to 2nd round projetions was because of an injury THAT HE PLAYED THREW. Seems to me that we got lucky on another player that fell to us because of injury concerns. What was his name again... Oh yah, Adrian Peterson.

Everyone questioning Spielman's decision needs to look at his drafts as a whole. He's had some bust picks for sure, but he's also had some great picks as well. Give it time and see what happens over the course of the year. I dont think were gonna make the playoffs this year, but I think we will be decent, and I wont even form an oppinion on Ponder till I see him play.

You ponder, you wonder. Who would have thought the Vikings wanted Joey Harrington all along. The thing is, for every one Joe Montana who comes along, there are ten Joey Harrington’s. So roll the dice on this kid. With his MBA degrees and all that, it’s really money in the bank for Frazier and his owners. The folks in Minnesota who are likely to sell out Vikes home games are happy to spend out on anticipation on this pick. Great now that Michelle Bachmann supporters will vote in favor of new stadium.

So let's see. They should have drafted a defensive stud? That way we could have good solid defensive stands and give the ball back to the offense for a three and out. I'm a big believer in a strong defense, but the best help you can give a defense is a possession offense. Otherwise defenses tire down. The best defense in the game will give up points if they spend too much time on the field. I like Joe Webb, but I’m not sure he’s a possession qb. This guy might just be great. Articles like this are crap with the idea that they could have waited until the second round and gotten a qb of “the same value”. What is that? The Vikes met this kid, studied this kid, then chose this kid. By all accounts, he’s smart, he’s mobile and he’s accurate. Too be honest, I wouldn’t trade him for Cam right now. Let’s give him a chance. Now shore up the Oline through the draft of FA. Defense can be next year’s project. This isn’t a one year process to rebuild.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
#1 Yes P Williams is going to be old, suspended, or simply out, but beyond him, our DL is an area of depth and strength. Why would you use a #12 pick there?
#2 What I've seen from Ponder looks pretty darn good to me, and I was pulling for Dalton. Quick decisions, quick release which is how opponents started game planning against the Vikings DL last year, and it worked.
#3 When you find "your guy", you're sold, you believe....there IS NO other player of "comparable value". Only backups are of comparable value, not the QB to lead you to the promised land.
#4 So reach or not, I'll be there each week pulling for Ponder!

They Wanted to Trade Back

Hyderabad, India

For a trade to take place there has to be two interested parties, not just one. The Vikings would have loved to trade down and still select Ponder, but there was no one willing to trade with them, plus I think Washington would have selected Ponder at #16 anyways. People need to figure out that this was a move that needed to be made. The qb carousel has to end some time. If the Vikings brass feel that Ponder could become a franchise qb, then they made the right decision by drafting him at #12. Good pick. I hope it works out. Go Vikes!!

I'm probably one of the few not offended by the pick. If you couldn't trade back, do you really want to chance the 3 QB's left that are upper tier (Mallett, Dalton and Nevada guy whose name I can't spell) will be around in the second round. Remember folks- we've been griping that we're sick of this team getting retread has-been QB's. We can't have it both ways.
