In my long exodus away from the religious right, the one thing I still have a personal problem with is abortion. Back then, every January, we’d hop on a bus full of people praying rosaries and head to Washington to protest the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. From a very early age, I was subjected to graphic pictures of aborted fetuses at every stage of gestation, and it still bothers me to this day.

I’m pro-choice, but thankfully it’s a choice I’ll never have to make since I lack that particular set of reproductive organs.

As much as I have my issues with abortion, my problems with those who oppose it far outweigh that uneasy feeling I get when being forced to view post-abortion photos in my travels through weird parts of the internet. I don’t like abortion, but then again, who actually does? It’s not like women get pregnant on purpose, just so they can have an abortion. It is a last resort for most, due to either unfortunate economic circumstances or a lack of access to birth control.

But who works to cause the endless spiral into poverty and who tries to block access to sex education and birth control at every turn? The religious right, especially fundamentalist Catholics, the same group I spent the entirety of my childhood surrounded by.

Even though I come from Jewish heritage on both sides, I was brought up in a very strict Catholic household. More than any other Christian religion, they have the biggest hangups overall when it comes to human sexuality. The strictest adherents are people who believe that sex that involves either partner using birth control is a sin, even if you’re married.

This is a religion that took until just recently to say it might be OK for a married couple to use a condom if one of them was infected with HIV. Seriously?

For them, it really comes down to this—it’s not about being pro-life, it’s about control. It’s about shaming those who do not follow their belief that sex should only be between married heterosexual couples, and only for the purposes of procreation. Again, this is not about children—it’s about wanting to force everybody to live by their unrealistic and twisted view of the Bible, under the guise of “protecting the unborn.” If it were about children, then they’d actually care about them after they were born, instead of trying to take away the programs that benefit them in their early years.

I have no problem with people who want to follow a religion, that’s fine. You can believe in whatever you want to believe, that’s the beauty of the 1st Amendment. It’s when you want to take your beliefs and shove it down the throats of myself or my children, that’s when I have a problem.

remember that even if the RC teaches that birth control to prevent birth is wrong in the eyes of the Church. many Catholics do use it. sometimes the person has decided that the sin of not allowing a pregnancy to occur is lesser than making sure the woman stays alive.
.
and not all Catholics are Republicans. my ex-in laws were both democrats and Catholics. and I know that several of them used birth control. including my late ex MiL. who had to have her tubes tied to save her life right after she gave birth to her last one. she had been told that she would die during a future pregnancy.
.
and they tended to hang around with others that believed as they did.
.
and believe me that it isn't just the Catholics that can have the biggest hangups about sex. even Protestants can have them. I grew up Protestant. and the ones I know had/have some rather large hangups about it. some will not let their kids move out till they are married.
.
one mom will not move out and let her son have the house till the he is married. thing is, he is nearly 50. they are Lutheran.
.
just because one person is of one religion. does not mean they are going to be the of the same political party that others of the same religion belong to.

Just Don't Engage and you don't have to worry about BC or Abortion. But, If you can support a child and not make the taxpayer do it, fine. When woman are having one baby after the other and sometimes with different men who don't support the child that is an un-justice to not only the taxpayer but the children. Any female who has a child that the taxpayer has to pay for should be mandated to have a Tubal Ligation so taxpayers aren't paying for 2,3,4, or more. Those dead beat Dad's should be mandated to have a Vasectomy also. They think it's a joke when they have kids with so many different woman because they don't pay. The morals in this day and age is another story.

Sociopath,

(Lemme Quote one of the Intelligent posters on Topix)

I love it when the low information voters respond with either a personal attack against the idividual that delivered the message, or an attack against the source of the message, without disproving the facts contained in the message.

It shows how weak and ignorant the low information veters actually are. They can not win based on facts, so they attack the message carrier.

What tripe. Give me one link, one video, one shred of evidence anyone on the right wants to "control" sex lives of others, or even gives a damn about it. Control and hypocrisy are insisting the government stay out of the sex lives of others on one hand, and then insisting the government finance it with taxpayer funded birth control and abortions on the other. Who's shoving who's views down everyone else's throat? Can libs be anymore hypocritical?

Way to twist things around! Republikans want to limit access to certain drugs, like birth control and the morning after pill. Republikans want to limit who can get married. Republikans want to limit access to medical procedures.

It is at part of the war on women and the Republikan attempt to force their religious values on America.

Racist,

Do you diddle yourself as you sit and post, after post, after post, the same thing on every Thread?

Has Mommy ever "Busted you" while bringing your Tomato Soup to your Darkened Room at Lunchtime?

You could share in the Thorazine that "The Seattle Sociopath" has stashed up for the Big Ride to the Light?

Dumb F______ Liberal, talk about turning things around! So, "limiting access" is now code for use your own damn money and your phony, lefty propagandized war on women? And what, exactly, are "republican" religious values? You can provide those links with the ones you provide on righties obsession with everyone's sex lives.

Logic is lost on a lefty....
