Kluwe and Baltimore linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo last month filed a friend of the court brief with the Supreme Court, arguing that California's Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage, is unconstitutional. The high court is expected to take up the case this spring.

This isn't the first time Kluwe and Ayanbadejo have joined forces. The outspoken Viking came to the Raven's defense last August when he was attacked by a Maryland legislator. Kluwe wrote a stinging (and profanity-laced) open letter for Deadspin, berating the politician.

The two players also spoke out prominently before November's elections, when Maryland voters approved gay marriage and Minnesota voters defeated an amendment that would ban it.

"It doesn't matter what your sexuality is; it matters what can you do on the field," Kluwe said. "Hopefully in a couple of years, maybe a decade, we'll be past this."

Kluwe told Patrick he assumes, based on statistics, that he has played with gay teammates but that he hasn't seen any anti-gay bias in the locker room.

"It's there casually in some respects. I don't know if I've ever seen any outright hatred of gay people in the locker room," he said. "For a lot of guys, once they're actually educated, once you actually get a chance to talk about the issue, they see how, not wrong, but how dumb that is. I mean, people are people. It doesn't matter what your sexuality is."

Patrick asked Kluwe to predict what kind of player would be the first to come out as openly gay.

"It has to be ... someone who can maintain the level of play that got them to the NFL even while there are distractions going on around them," Kluwe said. "You have to be able to persevere through that and, basically, shut everyone up by saying 'This is how well I can play. Deal with it.' "

Kluwe has become a lightning rod in the gay marriage debate because of his outspokenness, but not so much among his teammates and other NFL players.

"Guys in the locker room understand that's just kind of my character. I will speak out on stuff that I find interesting or deserving of attention," Kluwe said. "I've had guys come up to me and say we don't agree with your stance on gay marriage, but we appreciate you standing up for Brendon."

"I'm always happy to have a conversation with someone.... It will always be respectful," Kluwe said. "But at the same time, I'm going to ask you to bring facts and logic to back up your point of view, because that is how we argue. That is how we decide things."
