The National Rifle Association blasted Eric Holder for using the George Zimmerman case to attack "stand-your-ground" laws, accusing the attorney general of exploiting Trayvon Martin's shooting death for political gain.

Holder weighed in on the controversial self-defense laws for the first time on Tuesday during a speech to the annual NAACP convention, calling for a national review of the statutes.

"Separate and apart from the case that has drawn the nation's attention, it's time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods," Holder said.

Holder has already confirmed that his Justice Department continues to investigate Zimmerman, in the wake of his acquittal, for possible federal civil rights crimes. But Chris W. Cox, executive director NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, claimed Holder went too far in extending the debate to "stand-your-ground" laws.

"The attorney general fails to understand that self-defense is not a concept, it's a fundamental human right," he said in a statement. "To send a message that legitimate self-defense is to blame is unconscionable, and demonstrates once again that this administration will exploit tragedies to push their political agenda."

The laws are in place in more than two dozen states, including Florida. They allow people to use deadly force if they think their life is being threatened. The role that law played in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin is a matter of dispute -- Zimmerman's defense team technically did not use the law as the basis for their arguments.

But Holder, in his speech to the NAACP, suggested that the laws encourage gun owners to seek confrontation rather than avoid it.

"But we must examine laws that take this further by eliminating the common sense and age-old requirement that people who feel threatened have a duty to retreat, outside their home, if they can do so safely," Holder said. "By allowing -- and perhaps encouraging -- violent situations to escalate in public, such laws undermine public safety."

He called for a "hard look" at the laws. The crowd applauded as he said "we must stand our ground."

The "stand-your-ground" laws have been a popular target ever since the Martin shooting, and the pressure has intensified after Zimmerman was acquitted on Saturday.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott, though, told Fox News that officials should not politicize the case.

"We shouldn't turn this into politics. This was a tragedy," he told Fox News on Monday.

Scott noted that he already put together a bipartisan commission to examine Florida's "stand-your-ground" law.

"Their recommendation is we not make any changes, that it is working the way it was intended," Scott said.

Task Force Calls Stand Your Ground A Good Law
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami)– A task force looking into Florida’s Stand Your Ground law has determined the law is good and shouldn’t be overturned.

According to a report from the group released Friday by Governor Rick Scott’s office, all persons, regardless of citizenship status, have a right to feel safe and secure in Florida and have a fundamental right to ‘stand their ground’ and defend themselves from attack with proportionate force.

That's probably a reference to the fact that none of the so called black leadership like Jackson, Farrakhan, Sharpton, and yes, Obama, seem to ever make a big out cry or stage rally's or go on talk shows to address the black on black crime that is rampant in cities like Chicago. In fact, they often give those criminals a pass because they only commit crimes or participate in gang activity because "they are oppressed" and therefore "it's not their fault" that so many innocent bystanders get killed in their drive by's and revenge attacks.

Getting back to the topic at hand, Holder, much like Obama, is just a tool of the DNC who are trying to eliminate our constitutional rights. Especially the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th amendments.

The concept of "stand your ground" is a basic tenet of human survival and instinct. Holder ignores the fact that incidents like the Trayvon killing are very very rare amongst law abiding citizens who have carry permits. He is being led by the nose to try and find any excuse to make an example out of Zimmerman but even more importantly, further the anti-gun agenda of a government on the verge of trying to take all the guns away from the wrong people.

Hey, did you go to the protest the other night?
To your question, right now Holder is trying to use what I would call 'Double Jeopardy' because a lot of folks don't like the outcome of the first jury trial of Zimmerman.
And, he wants to get rid of the 'stand your ground' law which gives a person the right to defend their self outside of the protection of the home. That's what this thread is about.

Have you noticed they are only using the Zimmerman case to attack stand your ground laws. They could care less what actually happened, race is just a tool for them.

Yes I did attend the rally and it was productive ty for the info
I agree with Holder and he's doing his job everyone has the right to self defense but everyone don't to follow and and to provoke another person and to murder a person and to deny their rights and their life.

You know exactly what I'm talking about when I refer to gangs or gang violence. Especially in Chicago. And you know damned well it has nothing to do with how many people are standing on a corner. And I will continue calling out any of these so called community leaders (no matter what color, religion, political affiliation or race) when they fail to address some of the underlying issues. And in the case of kids who join violent gangs, it is usually because they have no decent family structure to fall back on.
