Good try, did you live those years? I assume so. You should recall what led up to numbers and perhaps the reasons.
Tunnel vision? I would say that is you Robert.
BTW ... nice bumper sticker slogans you use.
I'm coming up on mandatory retirement in a few years.
There shouldn't be any discussion about the 1980's recession without mentioning Paul Volcker by name.
Every number I posted about Reagan's second and third years are true. I remember 20%+ mortgage rates, do you?
What bumpersticker slogan did it post?

Reagan posted record deficits. I'm not happy with either his or obama's. Bush also left a record deficit. Clinton was the last prez to leave a surplus. So you must be a fan of his, right?
Robert
yes a record at the time, but a small fraction of what obama is doing, obama is spending at rates almost 10 times that amount, and yes I like a leader that can balance a budget, not one that has never had one.

Obama has deficits in one month as Reagan did in one year. Obama racked up in debt in 39 months what Bush did in 8 years.
I'm not disputing that at all. It's the reasons for doing that are what's important.

Carter had the high interest rates and inflation , they called it misery index. Reagan corrected all of that.

The unemployment rate is dropping because people have given up and left the work force not because of new jobs in Obamanomics. One of the few reasons we have 88 million unemployed.
Robert feels this deserves celebration.
88,000,000 unemployed now is about equal to what Reagan had in 1982-83, adjusted for different populations. You do realize that if the unemployment rate % never changed, it would still lead to increasing total numbers of unemployed, right?
America has created about 235,000 jobs in April and March. Enough? Nope, but headed in the right direction.....
Celebration? Hardly. Do you celebrate when a tornado wipes out part of your town, but not your neighborhood?

When reagan was sworn in, the prime rate was about 20%. It wasn't until August of 1982 that rates dropped below 15%.
Paul Volker dropped the rates, not Reagan.

Thanks...

5% is remarkable. Along with 22 million new job, fixed energy crisis, middle class bumped up to rich, length between jobs less than half of Obama, the decays of prosperity. Obama has the decade of food stamps

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? Would the unemployment rates be lower without any intervention? Higher? Is there any way to accurately know? Of course not.
Which is not what my original question was about. I was and still am looking for alternatives to what was done, using the info that was available at the time.
If you want to say the unemployment rate is 17-18%, that's fine with me. But then you need to use the same methodology with Reagan's 10.8%. How much higher would that be? And do the same with Bush's 8% his last month in office. Apples to apples, right?
Robert
The answer is this: stick to your principles and party platforms that you claim to stand by. Bush betrayed the principal of free market capitalism that is so heartily espoused by republicans and of course, the tea party. Obama betrayed the principals of ending corporate welfare and "spreading the wealth" so heartily espoused by democrats and of course, the "occupy" movement. In essence, their decisions were not based on what is good for the country but rather, what is good for the largest campaign contributors.(and their future potential book deals, tv appearances and speaking engagements) Neither was, as advertised, concerned with reducing unemployment or creating jobs or anything but their own ambitions and those of their party and handlers. Put that on your bleeping bumper sticker.
