High speed rail in Minnesota? And from Duluth to the Twin Cities?
A high speed waste of tax dollars.
Light rail in Minnesota is an oxymoron.
Let's first see how much this central corridor boondoggle costs against the number of users. Then subtract the financial losses suffered by University Ave. business owners during its construction that they will never recover from before even thinking about wasting more tax dollars.

IMHO, Wade presents himself as conservative but leans left at times.
Lefties tend to defend Natives when there is NO defense, they get off free living under the USA umbrella paying virtually NOTHING in taxes.
Wow, I have some leftist, union family members who would be surprised to hear that I "lean left". I don't think pointing out factual errors makes me a leftist. The only way an Indian does not pay taxes in Minnesota is if they do not have taxable income, live and earn all their money on their reservation, and do not buy any taxable goods off the reservation. I do not consider pointing out facts such as these to be defending anyone. Yes, I wish Skippy had not negotiated a compact with no sunset or tax provisions, but he did. I understand that the Mdewakanton Sioux have an agreement with Scott County to help pay for county services including roads.

Here we go again.

In order to get an agreement with the tribe for road repair, Scott County had to threaten to install a toll gate on the road.

There ya go leaning again.

I rwmember when they did that, about 20 years ago and it worked Canterbury tried to get slots and the Indians made an agreement and are paying them too. I'm not aware of other tribes doing anything similar.

I know of a great, old supper club in Carlton that was put out of business almost 20 years ago by Black Bear Casino. I also know that the Fon du lac Indians also reneged on an agreement to pay the city of Duluth in exchange for allowing them to open a casino in downtown Duluth (non-tribal land).

What was your point again?

A violation of the state compact with the native Americans and politically unacceptable.

Are you sure? I distinctly remember this topic from about 20 years ago. Maybe the threats weren't coming directly from the country commissioners, but from another source?

There is no provision in the compact between the State of Minnesota and the Indian tribes that would make a state run casino illegal. The monopoly is a product of the state legislature. You're correct, it would be politically unacceptable for the DFLers.

Well, you are wrong.

I was working at Scott County at the time and recall the exact circumstances.

The County road leading to the casino was in need of repair and the tribe refused to fund the repair. So the County gave the tribe written notice that a toll gate would be installed to recover the costs of the road repair and tolls would be collected to pay for the cost of the toll gate AND road repair.

The tribe was quick to put up the money to fix the road.

The natives in tis tribe are ALL multi-millionairs with all the big houses and white man toys anyone could want. They could pay taxes on casino profits and not be hurt in any way.

The tribe is acting like greedy people.

Mystic LAke has been open for like 22 years, and county road 82 wasn't upgraded from a two lane to a four lane a few years ago now. There was some rancor between the Mystic people and Scott County in the years leading up to the four lane being built, but no mention of a toll road that I remember, nor can I find anything via Google.

Twenty years ago everything wasn't on the web so you may be right, but I don't remember it.

You never worked for Scott County. Give us a date that this happened then - this would be public record.

OK, I stand PARTIALLY corrected. I got a hold of an acquaintance who happens to be a Scott County commissioner.

He says that the idea of making County Road 82 a toll road was "floated around" - his words, not mine - but stopped when the legislature passed a law prohibiting it.

Apparently this happened a long time before the road was finally updated.

Unlike most of you wingnuts out there, I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong.

Oh, and no official proposal was ever made so there is no public record of this. allegedly.

I'll also admit when wrong, but on this point it was clear at the time the "floated" threat made the tribe contribute the needed money to fis the road to their Gold Mine!
