Poll: Obama has a mandate to raise taxes on the wealthy and protect social programs

Almost two-thirds of Americans say that the November election results give President Obama a mandate to raise taxes on the wealthy, according to a new survey.

A new Bloomberg News national poll finds that 65 percent of those surveyed — including 45 percent of Republicans — say that Obama campaigned, ran and won on his pledge to hike taxes on income brackets over $250,000.

But almost the same number of Americans — 64 percent — say that Obama also has a mandate to protect popular entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Those results give Obama a mandate on his tax proposal — but make it clear that the public is deeply opposed to any entitlement reforms that might be part of any "grand bargain" over taxes and spending between the House GOP and the Obama administration.

Both sides have been at odds over how to unwind the pending combination of tax increases for all Americans and automatic spending cuts. Republicans have largely refused to budge on the principle that tax rates should not go up for anyone.

"Overall, 61 percent of voters say major spending cuts are necessary to reduce the deficit, while 33 percent think increasing taxes on high earners would be enough. Half of Democrats think taxing the rich is all that is needed. By contrast, majorities of Republicans (77 percent) and independents (62 percent) think cutting spending is also necessary.

Barack Obama

University of California
$1,203,532

Microsoft Corp
$815,435

Google Inc

Google had $700k in a PAC they funded, the remaining $100k, most of it came from Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google.

According to OpenSecrets, none of these corporations donated any money to Obama.

Seems like everything you post is a provable lie.

THAT is correct.

Your original statement that Google donated $700,000 to Obama was incorrect.

Do you understand the difference now? I'm glad that you finally had the balls to admit that you lied once at least.

We all value the Urban Troubadour perspectives you bring to the conversation.

However, it isn't like we did not know how ignorant and willfully stupid you Barry Backers are.

This is why America needs a test to weed out the illiterate and ignorant before you are granted permission to vote!

You sir will be turning in your Bro Card if you desire to vote.....America cannot endure you and your Cousins voting in another President because he is Black.

Go look up "mandate" in the dictionary, Consistent, if you can find time between swigs off your bottle of Phillips vodka.

Are you ready to let me help you with that 4th Step yet? It will help you out big time with that grandiosity, resentment and anger.

Google donated $700,000 to a Political Action Committee, and that money went to Obama's campaign. How is that different than you claiming the Koch brothers donated to Scott Walker exactly? Is it that they are only lies when you deem them to be?

No. Google did not donate $700,000 to a PAC. How many times do I have to tell you that?

Here. Here is the text from opensecrets.org .

"The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organizations' PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates."

Can you get it through your effing stupid mind that Google itself did NOT donate $700,000 to Obama or to a PAC?

How effing stupid are you that you can't understand plain English?

"Almost two-thirds of Americans say that the November election results give President Obama a mandate to raise taxes on the wealthy, according to a new survey."

Then almost 2/3 of Americans have been fooled in to believing that the wealthy in Congress would actually vote to increase their own taxes. It never, ever happens that way.
