"That sounds like political cover to me,'' said Daniel Wilcox, a fisheries biologist for the corps' St. Paul District.
He said Congress authorized the $4 million but didn't appropriate it. "We just can't go and spend money,'' he said. "We have to have both the authority and the appropriation.'

I think these two lines from the above story pretty much sums up the article to me. If this isn't political pandering, I don't know what is.

I couldn't agree with you more. They have had multiple chances to eliminate the Asian Carp starting over three years ago or more when they were downstream. On the news last night they presented a piece where a fisherman caught one of the carps in a net as it was soaring through the air, the camera got a good shot of it and amazingly, appallingly, unbelievably, incredibly, stupidly, let back in the water. I almost threw my television set in the swamp. This is political bile.

Daniel Wilcox is right. There is no silver bullet, and shutting down the locks to the Great Lakes would kill jobs in the shipping industry during a tough economic time. People need to take a step back and not take a drastic action like this to address a problem in an unproven and potentially harmful way.

Mr. Wilcox,
Essayons(Let us try), is it not the Corps of Engineers motto?

Perhaps it should be "Essayons, when we have the appropriation and funding in place and then maybe after we study it for a couple of years we can attempt to solve the problem. Providing of course that we haven't spent all of the appropriated funds on the aforementioned study"

An in depth scientific study on the survivability of the Asian Carp in the Great Lakes is already completed and published.

Here is the study Attorney General Lori Swanson, Senator Amy Klobuchar, and the rest of Minnesota's carp grandstand politicians don't want you to read:

The truth is that Asian Carp will not survive or colonize Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, or any of the open waters of any of the Great Lakes.

The Carp in the Chicago Waterways are not a threat to the Great Lakes. Furthermore, the electric barriers in Chicago are working fine. After 10 months of electro-fishing, poisoning, and netting only one Asian carp has been found beyond the electric barriers. In fact, in Illinois more Asian Carp have been found in lakes already hydrologicly separated from the rivers containing the Carp than have been found beyond the electric barriers.

The truth is building barriers does not stop the migration of invasive species and severing the waterways would cost billions of dollars and be no more effective than passive barrier technology.

All Attorney General Lori Swanson, Senator Amy Klobuchar, and other carp grandstand politicians are doing is spending millions of dollars to promote an ineffective strategy costing billions of dollars to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

Sound familiar!

I did not read the artical I just wanted to tell everyone what a POS the atty. generals office is. They are hired guns that defend the states stupidy at our expense, against us. We have had to file several complaints against the state and have tried to deal with their atty's and they are so dumb they couldn't get a job with a real firm (IE Norm Coleman, the only they do is stall and try to drain you of money while spending taxpayers money.... all BS.

Swanson doesn't do anything without the suggestion of her boyfriend Mike Hatch.

How's life been at the AG's office lately? Are those soundproof doors helping the morale?

Two suggestions:

Turn them into food. The carp that is. Cat food, dog food, you name it.

For the jumping carp, do the words,'trap shooting' bring something to mind? Great fun with an element of getting carp slapped to boot!
