A man was charged on Thursday for setting fire to his own business. Craig Hovde's south Minneapolis auto garage was destroyed last March by an explosion and fire. Full Story

Craig Hovde, and his father before him, worked on my vehicles for over 20 years. He never cheated me, and his pricing was fair. I always found him to be an honest businessman, and consider him to be my friend. I find it strange that it took so long,(since march 2007) for the police to get around to charging him. I am no arson investigator, but, how do you tell the difference between a acetylene/oxygen explosion and a natural gas/air explosion? The criminal justice system will decide Craig Hovde's fate, but lets those of us who were his neighbors keep an open mind about this man. Thanks for reading my commentary.

I do not doubt that Mr. Brown had a good business relationship with the Hovde's. However, I have heard many first-hand accounts of unfair practices and illegal activities on that site. Perhaps if Mr. Brown lived closer, he would have had a few clues that all was not as it should be. One elderly neighbor that did complain about Craig Hovde's business practice had his ham radio wires severed that very next night. Coincidental??? I don't think so. Keep an open mind, Mr. Brown, to the first-hand experiences of a vast majority of the neighbors.

BTW, it is quite easy to deduce that the explosion was indeed caused by the deliberate opening of the valve of the oxy/acetylene torch. The valve itself was not faulty in any way. The sheer magnitude of the explosion was far too much for mere natural gas. There was no evidence of faulty or even open natural gas lines. I hope that the criminal justice system does its job to put a felon deservedly behind bars.

Did you see the structure or were you familiar with it at all? How did acetylene/oxygen cause an explosion from the service area that went through a wall into the office to blow two block walls 60 feet away from the building and yet didn't have any impact to the walls directly surrounding it? If that isn't crazy, how about that acetylene is lighter than air and highly explosive, yet there was a standing pilot light (constant flame) in the building near the ceiling of the service bay? Oh and by the way, the service bay ceiling was higher than the office, so how do you explain that Julia? Thanks you Ross for looking for the truth and keeping an open mind.
