Joe Soucheray: Tornadoes haven't spiked - the population has

Getting from downtown Minneapolis to downtown St. Paul in 2014 will take about 40 minutes on a Central Corridor light-rail train, the result of a $957 million construction project half funded by Washington. Full Story

This is good news. At least we got the money. And, with $6.00 gasoline and higher, this could help.

This will be a big win for The Metro area and Minnesota as a whole. It takes cars off the road, reducing the state's need for fossil fuels; Un-clogs I 94; Allows commuters to be more efficient by getting work done on the train. Hope the success of the line leads to an express track that can cut the travel time during rush hour to 15 minutes between downtowns.

"It's official": The Metropolitan Council in partnership Saint Paul's mayor and city council are now free to squander nearly a billion taxpayer dollars, coupled with annual loses in the millions of dollars, for CCLRT service that will run no faster than the route 50 bus University Avenue bus service it replaces.

CCLRT will have twenty one stations from Union Depot to Nicollet Mall and feature a one way travel time of 43 minutes, over nine miles. Roundtrip it will be 40 minutes slower than I-94 Express bus service, most of which will be eliminated to artificially inflate CCLRT ridership numbers. This train will do nothing to help the environment nor to ease traffic congestion.

The circuitous downtown Saint Paul routing of it will later be viewed as one of this city's great planning mistakes. No city with sound planners would bring such needless disruption and congestion to a downtown which continues to decline as a regional business and retail center.

Honest sound tests for the CCLRT horns/gongs here were withheld to keep thousands of downtown residents in the dark. The politicians and CCLRT 'planners' did not want them to hear the sounding of six per train horns/gongs sounding over 200 times a day, for trains coming and going, from 4am to 2am, seven days a week. Nothing like it exists in downtown Minneapolis because one, LRT there makes a straight shot down Fifth Street and two, few residents live on or close to the downtown line there.

A person could go on and on... The Central Corridor Light Rail Project became a power grab, a Legacy Project. Rather than insisting that this huge taxpayer transit investment be as efficient as possible, politicians and CCLRT planners instead have chosen to ruin an historic opportunity, thereby dooming CCLRT to be ridiculed once it is in operation.

There is no such thing as Federal Funds - It's all taxpayer dollars. Light Rail is a seriously misguided idea.

Government out of control

Minneapolis, MN

#12 Apr 27, 2011
Total insanity, this government is so far out of control it's going to take a revolution of some kind to bring it back to the people, allowing the people as a majority to control it with intelligent thinking and common sense. The way it stands right now the only people controlling us and our government are the special interest groups and lobbyists for their own personal gain at the expense of the tax payers. As Dayton, Franken, McCollum and Federal officials otherwise known as the Mickey Mouse Club meet today to sign a multi-million dollar deal the tax payers will be responsible for is about as asinine as it gets. Don't these idiots realize the government is broke both state and federal, they have no business driving America further into the ground with this ridiculous and wasteful spending. Light rail is not a need it's a want, and the government better take care of the people's needs before they buckle to and give special interest groups their wants.

40 minutes for what would take 10 in a car. Doesn;t mention how late that train will be picking you up either. Damn liberals and their light rail agenda. Right now the line they have costs 42 dollars and only costs 3 bucks per rider,so losing 39 a trip pe rider for light rail. Taxpayers are getting screwed here by the green Sierra Club goofballs.

Nearly half of that federal money was borrowed from the Chinese. It will be added to the unconscionable pile of debt heaped on our children and grandchildren, all to fund a billion dollar boondooggle that will benefit a tiny number of Minnesotans.

Shame on anyone who can justify throwing away money like this.

Some of these writers are clueless. Businesses are closing and the Gov is spending a BILLION of our dollars, and people are happy.

When does the insanity end. In 3 years when this rail line is done, there wont be any small business left on University Ave.

Liberals have no problem throwing money away. This isn't an efficient way to move people or product, but progressives get their throwback to the 1900's train.

40 minutes? How long was the bus ride? 35 min?

And where do you think the federal dollars for this project comes from? Our other pocket! This was not "free" money you morons!

The American dollar is in freefall, we're printing dollars like it's toilet paper, and these morons are standing there grinning ear to ear!

Federal governent didn't fund half the project, taxpayers did with our gas tax money. The only way we could get our money back from the federal government was to agree to waste it on a choo choo from St Paul to Minneapolis which 99% of us can't utilize for our morning commute. It will alow gang members to get around more easily. Most of them don't pay the fare, so that's great to know also.

Franken should be fired just for being there with a smile on his face. Every time I see Franken reminds me of how important it is that we pass a voter ID bill. He wouldn't be there if we had such a bill in 2008.
