GOP lawmakers consider raising the amount of their per diem expenses

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Madison - Nearly two years after making public workers pay more for their benefits, Assembly Republicans are considering raising how much the 99 members of their chamber can claim for expenses.

Republicans in the Senate have rejected the idea, but Assembly leaders can still push through the hike in expense reimbursements in their house if they want. The Assembly's top Democrat said he is open to the idea but that it is not a priority.

The proposal to raise daily expenses, known as per diem, comes as Rep. Robin Vos (R-Rochester) prepares to be sworn in next month as Assembly speaker. He said he would consider raising the per diem rate, noting it hadn't been raised in about a decade.

"I'm open to it. As we look at where we are, it's something to consider," Vos said.

The proposal is facing some opposition in the Assembly.

"I think at a time when we're trying to make ends meet with our own state employees ... it hardly seems the right time to be raising per diem rates," said Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee).

Really, its the Democratic state senators that need their per diems raised for when they sneak out and hide in Illinois.

WI per diem payments: Senators outside Dane County may receive a per diem up to $88 to cover living expenses while they are in Dane County on state business.

MN per diem payments: During the regular legislative session, legislators can be reimbursed up to $96 per day for travel and living expenses when away from home. Legislators can collect the "per diem" payments seven days a week during the legislative session, whether or not they are actually at the state house. The per diem payments are included toward the recipient's pension and can add more than forty percent to some members' income.

In MN it contributes to your pension and can add as much as 40%. Why am I not surprised?

MN has had a history of Democrat Legislaors abusing their per deim payments. Remember Mee Moua? She is one example of someone who made twice as much as her salary because the rules were far too lax and no one was held accountable.

But only pay them for time they are actually in Dane County, it will make it harder for them to stay in Illinois shirking their constitutional duties.

Yeah, I hope the dems don't try a recall campaign based on legislation that gets passed in the state session, sore losers.
