The Obama campaign is wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on attack ads targeting Republican challenger Mitt Romney. Save your money, folks: the former Massachusetts governor needs little help in savaging his own reputation and prestige. What’s even better, just about every news organization in the world is showing it for free.

After just three days in London, on a tour that was supposed to demonstrate his qualities as a statesman and a leader, a chastened Romney leaves the United Kingdom widely reviled as a laughing stock and, worse, a “wazzock”– whatever that is.

It was not only Romney’s widely publicized remarks that the British capital did not seem ready for the Games; that, at least, had the merit of bringing Londoners together for once in support of the great world sporting extravaganza. After months of “whinging” about everything from traffic snarls to anti-aircraft missiles installed on apartment rooftops, thousands of newly enthusiastic Brits thundered their approval when London Mayor Boris Johnson asked,“Are we ready?”

Johnson then led the crowd in a chant of “Yes, we can”– an obvious tribute to US President Barack Obama, whose 2008 campaign resounded to the same cry.

Romney repeatedly demonstrated why his handlers should never, ever let him out of their sight: in a press conference outside No. 10 Downing Street, he proudly touted his productive meetings with “the head of MI6.” This gave British officials heart palpitations: the super secret intelligence agency is, by tacit agreement, almost never mentioned in public, and no one on the British side would confirm that such a meeting took place.

The series of gaffes prompted one of Britain’s newspapers, The Examiner, to ask a rather pointed question:

“Why vote for a man who, on his first foreign trip as a presidential candidate, insults one of America’s staunchest allies… and can’t even keep a secret? Asked another way... is Mitt Romney ready to be president?”

It was not just the choleric Brits who were appalled by Romney’s shambolic performance. Carl Lewis, the great American track star and winner of 10 Olympic medals, was unsparing in his remarks to The Telegraph:

“I swear, sometimes I think some Americans shouldn't leave the country. Are you kidding me, stay home if you don't know what to say."

Not exactly the effect Romney was looking for.

For an American politician, Britain is an easy date: just praise the country as a steadfast ally, mention Churchill a couple of times and we’ll roll over. Yet somehow Romney managed to provoke both the prime minister and the capital’s mayor – both fellow conservatives who should regard a Republican nominee as a kindred spirit – into public rebukes. That takes some doing. So what explains how an accomplished politician, with the resilience to have prevailed in a bruising primary campaign, could mess up so badly? The answer says a lot about Romney – and a fair bit about the dire state of today’s Republican party.

In the first category comes the observation that, despite having sought the presidency twice and served as a state governor, Romney is not really a politician at all – not in the Bill Clinton sense of someone who thinks, talks and breathes politically, constantly calculating the likely impact of both words and deeds. Instead Romney speaks and acts like the chief executive he was for so long, whether of private equity firm Bain Capital or the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics of 2002.

As we’ve learned in recent weeks, thanks to the likes of Barclays’ Bob Diamond or G4S’s Nick Buckles, corporate titans, so used to the nodding appreciation of yes men, can lack elementary tact and diplomacy, failing to weigh their words for tone, timing and likely reception. Technically, nothing in what Romney said about London 2012 was especially contentious – if, that is, he were merely the former CEO of the 2002 Games speaking privately to Coe a month ago. But for a man who seeks to be the lead partner in the US-UK alliance, speaking on the day before the Olympic flame was lit, it was a diplomatic disaster.

It’s surely CEO thinking too which has led Romney to refuse to release all his past tax returns, even though President Obama has published his in full. CEOs recoil from such personal transparency, while politicians know they will have to succumb eventually and so had better get it over with. Above all, their exorbitant pay means the elite chief executive class is habitually and unavoidably out of touch with everyone else. It is the Romney of the 1% who could smilingly tell an audience in hard-pressed Detroit that his wife has “a couple of Cadillacs”, beaming again today as his wife referred to the “horses”, plural, she owns (including one competing in the Olympic dressage event, providing a picture-perfect image of elitism for his opponents to feast on).

Read Obama's autobiography and then have the conversation with him about his Marxist beliefs.

I am simply repeating what he wrote about.

Obama is a Marxist.

Mitt the Twit' has London in a snit
Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was still getting attention in London, where the Olympic Games opened Friday, but it wasn't the kind he was hoping for. "MITT THE TWIT," headlined The Sun, while the Daily Mail asked, "Who invited party-pooper Romney?" in the wake of his comments questioning London's preparedness and Londoners' interest in the Games. Romney scored more points on the Gaffe-O-Meter when he said something about looking out the "back side" of No. 10 Downing Street and when he said he had
Ido Aharoni, left, consul general of Israel in New York, speaks as Avi Melamed, surviving member of the 1972 Israeli Olympic team, listens before Jewish and New York community members observed a moment of silence Friday in New York to honor the 11 Israeli Olympic athletes killed by Palestinian militants at the 1972 Munich games.(Stan Honda/AFP/Getty Images)
met with the head of Britain's MI6 intelligence agency -- a meeting that was supposed to be secret. Romney was very publicly called on the carpet by London Mayor Boris Johnson, who said to tens of thousands of people gathered at Hyde Park: "There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready. Are we ready? Yes, we are!" London is the first stop on a tour of Britain, Israel and Poland that is meant to burnish Romney's foreign policy credentials and his image as a statesman. There's little doubt that it's off to a bad start.

Mitt Romney says he is not responsible for the American companies bankrupted and thousands of American jobs outsourced to foreign countries by Bain Capital between 1999 and 2002 because he no longer worked for Bain after 1999. Reliable news sources - including the Boston Globe - have since uncovered and reported evidence which contradicts Romney's claim, and shows that Romney was still running Bain in 2002. Romney could put the whole "misunderstanding" to rest by releasing his tax returns from 1999 through 2002, but he stubbornly refuses to do so. As one of millions of Americans who Romney is asking to vote for him this November, I now ask "Mitt, what are you hiding?"

Saul Alinsky, Rules for Radicals, pub. 1971

RULE 12: Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.(This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)

The Marxist Obama is proud of your efforts to deflect and divert. Comrade, you done good. Perhaps if you continue to support the Marxist President, he will help you get your job back at the Post Office.

Romney’s Gaffes Worsen in Israel
Posted by Andy Borowitz

Romney-crop_opt.jpg

TEL AVIV (The Borowitz Report)—The Mitt Romney Gaffe Express pulled into a new station today, leaving its conductor’s hopes of proving himself to be a nimble statesman in tatters.

Mr. Romney’s troubles began in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to whom he presented gifts of a HoneyBaked ham and a wheel of cheddar cheese.

After Mr. Netanyahu ordered both gifts removed from his residence and destroyed, Mr. Romney went on to address the Knesset, where he congratulated the Jewish people on building the pyramids.

“Ann and I saw them during a cruise we took to the Middle East, and they were magnificent,” he told the stunned legislators.“As accomplishments go, building the pyramids isn’t up there with saving the Olympics, but you should still feel very, very proud. Nice job.”

Sensing that his remarks were not going over as well as intended, Mr. Romney improvised:“No, really. Incredible building job you did. If any of you would like to work on our house in La Jolla, just say the word. Only thing is, you’ll have to work Saturdays.”

Mr. Romney’s day concluded with an awkward moment at the West Bank, where he attempted to deposit ten million dollars.
