Jesse Jackson Jr. pleads guilty to misuse of campaign cash

WASHINGTON Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson pleaded guilty this morning to a conspiracy count involving misuse of more than $750,000 in campaign cash, a crime that is expected to land him in prison.

Jackson entered the anticipated plea in Act One of a two-part drama playing out in federal court not far from the House chamber where he served. Act Two is on tap this afternoon, when his wife, former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, is expected to plead guilty to filing false tax returns.

Jackson Jr. entered a negotiated plea of guilty on one felony count of conspiracy to commit false statements, wire fraud and mail fraud. Prosecutors say he spent campaign contributions to buy luxury items, memorabilia and other goods.

As the Jacksons arrived at federal court in Washington, D.C. this morning, neither responded to questions from reporters. The two stepped out of a black SUV, and Sandi Jackson walked ahead of her husband, carrying a satchel. Jackson Jr. looked up when reporters shouted questions but said nothing and looked down as he went into the building.

Minutes later, his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., and other family members walked through the front entrance of the courthouse, their arms linked together.

Jackson Jr., who resigned three months ago after 17 years in Congress, entered the plea before U.S. District Court Judge Robert Wilkins. Jackson Jr. was represented by three Washington lawyers: Brian Heberlig, Reid Weingarten and William Drake.

Corrupt Illinois Politicians: Indicted Elected Officials Through The Years (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/25/2012 5:36 pm Updated: 02/25/2012 5:36 pm

On Thursday, Cook County Commissioner William Beavers was indicted Thursday on allegations of tax fraud. While the news made a few front pages the following day, the city -- and state -- responded overall with a collective sigh.

Just last week, Chicago was named the most corrupt city in America according to a study by the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Illinois' Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

The report cites federal data showing that, between 1976 and 2010, there were 1,531 convictions for public corruption in "the federal district dominated by Chicago," according to the Associated Press.

U.S Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the man who announced charges against former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich in 2008, has publicly said he plans to stop corrupt politicians from thriving in the state.

On Friday, Beavers told reporters he did not "give a f**k" about Fitzgerald, adding "F**k him."

Beavers is not the first local politician to proclaim innocence after an indictment -- and will sadly not be the last. We rounded up some other local politicians who have been charged with corruption in Chicago, Cook County and Illinois. Since 1,531 slides seemed excessive, we stuck to some of the most recent corrupt officials. And since Beavers has yet to have his day in court, we left him out... for now.

1531 officials in Chicago charged with corruption? Maybe Al Capone wasn't the biggest Chicago crook after all.

You told people to judge a man, by other men's actions ?? WOW !! Quite a bigoted perspective....

Pf course, you make up words, lie, switch monikers, and claim to be 483 years old, too...

Guess, ALL rethugs are POS liars, given you both or you, if this is just another moniker...

Do you really think that the Republican party is less corrupt than the Democrats?

There is no difference. There are corrupt politicans in both parties. There are Congressmen that cheat on their wives in both parties. There are campaign violations by both parties.

Dumbo, your selective reading limits your ability to think. I have spoken up about both sides of the political fence on numerous occasions.

But I do have my favorites like the BFF's from Chicago: Blago, The Rev Jesse and his corrupt children, Ayers & Dohrn and their little puppet...the teleprompter reader himself...Barack Hussein Obama.
