N. Hampshire official: Police chief left gun unsecured, teen used it for suicide

(CNN)-- A New Hampshire police chief was cited Friday for improperly storing his service firearm after a teenager used the weapon to commit suicide in the chief's home in March, according to the local prosecutor.

Danville Police Chief Wade Parsons allegedly left his firearm, a .40-caliber Glock 22 pistol, on top of a safe in his bedroom closet on March 11, said Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams.

Parsons left the house to run errands, while the boy -- the 15-year-old son of the chief's girlfriend -- remained in the home.

"The service weapon was used by a juvenile to shoot himself while no one else was home," Reams said in a news release.

When Parsons returned, he discovered the boy's body, Reams said.

"There is no clear explanation (for the suicide)," Reams told CNN Friday. There had been no previous signs that the youth was troubled, Reams added.

Parsons was not charged in the youth's death, Reams said.

The chief was charged with violating a New Hampshire statute that requires any person to securely store a firearm when a child is likely to gain access to it without parental or guardian permission.

A court date has not yet been set. The maximum fine under the statute is $1,000, according to Reams' news release.

This is the first time Reams has cited anyone with the violation in his 15 years as county attorney, he said.

Parsons did not immediately respond to CNN's requests for comment.

Danville is located in southeastern New Hampshire and is about 10 miles north of the Massachusetts line.

Reams said he hopes the tragedy will remind people of the importance of storing weapons properly.

"Nobody feels worse about this than the police chief," said Reams. "But I hope it's a reminder to people in New Hampshire to make sure that children don't have unsupervised access to firearms. That's the statement our legislature has made. We expect people to live up to it."

Off-Duty Officer Killed Boyfriend, Their Year-Old Son and Then Herself, Police Say

To those on the outside, the couple seemed content, spending time together on a quiet block in Brooklyn, working at solid city-paid jobs and delighting in their infant son.

Almost certainly there was nothing so outwardly amiss between them that it could have foretold the crime that unfolded on Monday morning inside the woman’s apartment on East 56th Street, in the Flatlands neighborhood.

Investigators said the woman, an off-duty police officer identified by family and friends as Rosette M. Samuel, fatally shot her boyfriend and their 1-year-old son before killing herself, the police said.

The officer’s 19-year-old son escaped; he fled through a bedroom window after hearing gunshots, said Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman.

The son, who had been asleep in a rear bedroom, called 911 around 8:30 a.m. and met responding officers in front of the house, where the family rented a first-floor apartment, Mr. Browne said.

The bodies of the officer and baby were found, face up, on a bed; a crib sat near the bed against a bedroom wall, Mr. Browne said. Officers discovered the body of the child’s father lying just inside the home’s entrance, in the front hallway.

“It was a tough crime scene,” Mr. Browne said.

The boyfriend, identified by relatives as 33-year-old Dason Peters, lived nearby and had planned to take his son, Dylan, swimming at an indoor pool near their home later that day. It was a regular father-son outing, according to a man who identified himself as a cousin and co-worker of Mr. Peters.

The 19-year-old, whose name was not released, is Officer Samuel’s son from a previous relationship. Investigators said the officer used her “off-duty” gun, a 9-millimeter Glock that she was authorized by the department to carry when not on the job.

---If only this officer didn't have a gun this could have been prevented how sad.

The only people who apply to be police officer's are the funny looking kids from high school who got picked on. They join LE to try to relieve their feelings of low self esteem. They also have small dicks and compensate with a weapon
