It's good they have a fishing contest for large Knee Grows. But all they can catch is minnows.
More than 1,700 anglers gathered at Pike Lake northwest of Duluth on a blustery afternoon Sunday for the 13th annual Big Jig Ice Fishing Contest to benefit the University of Minnesota Duluth athletic scholarship fund.
Chris Spanaway reeled in the biggest fish of the day, a 0.835-pound bass, and took home the top prize — a 2013 Yamaha Rhino 4x4. Jack Bjorklund finished second with a 0.675-pound rock bass, winning a three-day houseboat trip. Third prize, a Yamaha F20 four-stroke outboard motor, went to Craig Gelineau with a 0.64-pound walleye.
Matt Baer (0.605-pound walleye) and William Brown (0.565-pound walleye) rounded out the top five. More than $50,000 in prizes were awarded during Sunday’s contest.
