Tubby Smith fired at Minnesota; Gophers may pursue Shaka Smart
One day after Minnesota lost to Florida, 78-64, with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line, Gophers head coach Tubby Smith has been fired, CBSSports.com reported.

Smith was 124-81 in six seasons in Minnesota and reached the NCAA Tournament three times, but didn’t win a game until knocking off No. 6 seed UCLA in the second round last week.

Tubby Smith is out after six seasons at Minnesota.(AP Photo)Athletic director Norwood Teague, who was hired last year from Virginia Commonwealth, is likely positioning himself to make a run at VCU coach Shaka Smart, according to the report. Teague, along with senior associate athletic director Mike Ellis, hired Smart at VCU.

Smith came to Minnesota in 2007 after 10 seasons at Kentucky in which he took the Wildcats to the tournament every year and won the championship in 1998, his first season in Lexington, Ky.

He also coached at Georgia for two seasons and Tulsa for four before being hired at Kentucky. In 22 seasons, Smith is 511-226 with 16 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT trips.

Smart was hired at VCU in 2009 and led the Rams to a 27-9 record his first season and a CBI championship. The following season, he took VCU to the Final Four—from the First Four—where they lost to Butler, 70-62.

The Rams reached the third round last season and were eliminated by Michigan in the third round last week. In four seasons at VCU, Smart is 111-36.

In Tubby’s six years I was never sure what his offensive philosophy was! for the past couple of years he has had two talented front court big men, yet we never saw a focus to get the ball into them. The Hollins backcourt duo shot really well, early in the season, but the Gophers never really established a solid half court game. I think they wanted to go outside in, but never seemed to find a way to get the big guys the ball, unless they were 20 feet from the hoop. Some of the defections, like Bryce White, also seemed to point out some issues internally. I wish Tubby the best, but it is time for a new start.

Florida used an overpowering first half to earn a 78-64 win Sunday over No. 11 seed Minnesota in the third round of the South Regional.

Good luck the Gophers getting Shaka Smart. UCLA is looking very hard at getting him. Let's see Minnesota or UCLA, which school would he want to coach basketball at? Plus with the depth of the UCLA basketball alumni and the school's history and their financial backing that can provide those little extras, Minnesota has zero chance of landing him if he wants to leave his current situation.

I thought they did well being that the total IQ of the team (including the coaching staff) was less than that of a speed bump!
