Classic Government failure.

HBC "engineered" the deal with a major miscalculation. They figured because 75% of the people who voted supported the deal that the City of Monticello would be able to force everyone in Monticello to use the City owned fiber service.

You know just like the booze store. If you want to buy booze in the City limits of Monticello you MUST buy it at the City booze store. The City has a Monopoly on the booze business.

However the City for some reason didn't want to force another monopoly on residents. I wonder why?

IF the City simply forced everyone to use the City fiber service they could have made money on the fiber service.

Oh well maybe the residents will wake up and get rid of the City booze store as well.

Government should NEVER create a monopoly, customers/residents don't win in the long run.

The Nisswa muni booze store was rocked by some relations amongst employees, some staff changed.

Government should stick to the minimum of doing anything. I.E. if the private sector does it then Government shouldn't.

If you don't like the way that your local city sells booze, then drive a few miles, and buy it somewhere else. NOTHING illegal about that. If you don't like your city trying to monopolize your utility services
(phone, internet, TV), then buy from a PRIVATE competitor.

I know of NO CITY, COUNTY, STATE, or FEDERAL entity that has EVER run a utility service efficiently, and that includes WATER and SEWER.

If you have a choice, then exercise it. Money talks, BS walks.

This BS about buying gov't services being better for the "community" has run it's course. I ain't buying it, and I've been working in this field for over 30 years, and have been a homeowner for almost as long.

The only way Government can continue to be in business is if they have a monopoly, with NO competition.

With the ability to tax residents AND overcharge for whatever product or service they provide there is no way even an idiot can fail. AND the worst situation is to have a Government organization that has a wann-a-be developer working there.

Monopolies are l6ike a Socialist government, they FAIL to produce te best product/service.

In fact they end up providing the WORST product/sevice.

In the case of Monticello the Governent "leaders" should hang their heads in shame because they made many bad decisions and now continue their bad decisions.

Read the info from their web site, they have a Fiber Commission and are now getting interest in the fiber offerring from the muni booze store. This cannot be made up, the muni booze store is a Government store so it is very difficult to get that business.

What a joke!!

Where is the outrage from Monticello residents?

History of Monticello Fiber is really funny.

Some guy complained his business didn't have needed bandwidth. So the City hopped into the proverbial bed with Hiawatha Broadband Communications and started a project to install fiber to every HOME in Monticello.

The project startup cost turned out to be $15,000 for each man woman and child in Monticello.

So now the town is defaulting on the bonds to pay for the fiber project which will tarnish the towns bond rateing costing the taxpayers even more to fund town operations.

Are there any SMART people in Monticello?

Monticello is now grasping for a new beggining and hired Gigabit Squared, how can you go wrong with a company named that?

I guess they figured out Hiawatha Broadand Communications wasn't up to getting 'er done. A keen sense of the obvious they have.
