NEW YORK CITY -- Yesterday’s last-ditch mediation between Hostess Brands Inc. and its striking bakery union failed to produce a deal to keep the troubled Twinkies maker afloat. Hostess said it will ask a bankruptcy judge today for permission to shut down permanently.

Judge Robert Drain, who oversaw yesterday’s (Nov. 21) mediation, is set to rule on Hostess Brands' motion to close the company at a hearing today in White Plains, NY. The hearing had been set for Monday, but was postponed after Drain asked the two sides to mediate in a final effort to save the 18,500 jobs at the company.

Hostess said it was forced to seek liquidation after the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union, representing about 5,000 Hostess workers, went on strike Nov. 9., forcing it to shut down operations and putting an unbearable burden on the already struggling company.| SEE STORY

The 82-year-old maker of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos had previously said reaching a deal that could restart the company's nationwide network of 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers, which have been shut down since Nov. 16, would be difficult due to the financial damage already caused by the strike.

Why is it any of your business? It's between the employees (via the union) and the company.

I'm sick of you anti-union morons. Expect unions to become more common again as big business and the government keeps pushing down prevailing wages.

A very wise and successful businessman once told me that 85% of all business bankruptcy are caused by poor management. In this case both the union leaders and the business leaders share equally in this loss of a bakery business icon.

So why not advertise for replacement workers replacing the ones on strike. Hostess can function fine without Union workers.

Furthermore if you don't belong to a Union you don't have to pay Union dues.

18,000 people out of work because a union of 5,300 people would not accept a Bankruptcy Judge's determination that an 8% pay cut was necessary to keep the business profitable.

If the typical union member made $20 per hour, that means they either accept $18.40 per hour or get $0.00 per hour.

How much brain power is required to say that $18.40 is better than nothing?

Equipment will be purchased and moved to China and used to produce Hostess products.

It won't be long before Hostess products are available (made in china) AND the china made products will be less expensive.

Bankruptcy proceedings are managed by the public court system, and are a matter of public interest. As soon as Hostess Brands filed for protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection it became everyone's business.

What business is it of yours if someone else wants to comment? You feel that you can interject on other people's comments, but other people shouldn’t comment in the first place?
