Your response may have an inkling of credibility if this was a single officer and victim being caught on camera not in a public place; but it wasn't. Do you really belive that he intentionaly killed someone in front of a loaded bart train surrounded by that many bystandards? Police officers these days are fully aware that nearly everyone has a camera phone. See this for what it is, a disturbingly horrible accident which now carries very deep racial undertones.
Yes I do believe look the cops in Salinas

Individuals rioting in Oakland, could care less about a white cop shooting a black person. The riots are all about stealing and getting something free. How many of the thugs watching their new stolen TV, need to be in jail? the white cop sohuld have never been charged with anything.

Are you serious? "That kid" was handcuffed so what game was he playing? "If more and more cops started "takin care of business" the drug and gang community might just think twice," as you posted. Are you the devil? If more and more so-called peace officers act like Mehserle, then the so-called "drug and gang community" have no choice but to become more violent with the paramilitary organization called the police. The so-called "drug and gang community" will be forced to "takin care of business" which would be a sad reality. Instead of being the devil you are, why not attempt to be human. A human who admit the victim was no angel. However, the young man did not deserve to be shoot in the back. Mehserle should had been convicted of second degree murder but devils run this corrupt system. TO AFRICANS IN AMERICA - especially brothers - drugs are a trap. You cannot win in a negative reality so please stop selling drugs. Gangs are a trap. You cannot win in a negative reality so please disassociate from groups that justify Mehserle's devilish ways. As long as we do not change our thinking, more Mehserles are coming. If you refuse to change your mentality, at least protect yourself and do onto Mehserle, what Mehserle and his associates are doing onto us. It is that simple.

You are a Racist. So lets placate the "poor" victim who incited his own demise. He didn't do anything wrong at all did he....If anyone thinks that then they are a bigger fool than J.M.F. here.

It was a horrible mistake that many people have very passionate arguments for one side or the other. I personally don't belive Mehserle intentionaly killed this young man. It is irrational to belive that he would put his well paying job, his freedom, and reputation on the block like that. That being said, he is a police officer and should be held to a higher standard regardless of his actions being an accident. I think his sentence was fair. I don't think Grant deserved to die. I think this is a horrible situation for all involved.
Good Post! One can find valid arguements for each side, but it's pretty much a situation that got way out of hand and, unfortunately, nobody wins in a situation like this. I don't think Mehserle even knows why he pulled his gun; but the fact that he did had horrible repercussions. I think his fight or flight took over and he over-reacted, personally. But I hope everyone involved can find some peace, somewhere down the line.

<quoted text> You did use a dumb argument; but at least you manned up and admitted your ignorance about guns. I am not a cop, but have a lot of experience in emergency situations. Being able to function and do the job is not easy to say the least. The cops deserve our understanding and support; along with the Monday morning quarterbacking.
Yeah, I assumed his gun would have a safety he had to flick off with his thumb or something. Having the safety incorporated into the trigger makes a good arguement for doing what a cop tells you to do. I don't even like seeing a gun in a cops holster. Cops guns scare me.

Now I am a racist? Do you even know what a racist is? Definitely NOT! I clearly stated in my post that the victim was no angel. However, if he was a devil like yourself handcuffed, no so-called police officer should be allowed to grab any weapon to subdue a handcuffed assailant. Regardless of who incited the incident, so-called police officer are not justified to do ANYTHING. So-called police officer have rules too. Mehserle is a criminal, a murderer. If anyone thinks that Wacko Weed makes any sense, I am selling a golden bridge in the Bay Area.

Is this another instance of Police being "Held to a higher standard"? What an absolute joke.

Taser - Bright yellow, very light (<1 pound), funny trigger and shape. Easily distinguishable feel from a gun when holding in the proper firing two hand grip.

Glock - Black, weighted (2.5 pounds), regular pistol grip, 5-9 pounds of trigger pull
Hmmm

A taser and a gun are nothing alike. He obviously had to take the safety off the gun before he used it. Unless he walks around without his safety on. Taking the safety off he would've realized it was a gun and not a taser.
Unless you are a police officer under these conditions, you wouldn't really know what the "obvious" is. What is obvious is that there were expert witnesses who testified that this mistake could have happened. Although this was unfortunate, he would be alive today if he didn't resist. Unlike Rodney King, this was not police brutality. It was an accident.

You need to read all the posts. I recanted my opinion after others pointed out to me how Glocks safetys are incorporated into the trigger, which made me realize that the gun could've accidently gone off. So, stop acting like you think you're so smart. Too bad he pulled the gun in the first place though, isn't it. His actions have gone a long way in eroding people's trust in a police officer's competency. No, it wasn't brutality, but it sure doesn't give me much confidence that police officers aren't going to shoot you by accident. My feeling is to stay as far away from police officers as I can. I have never called a police officer for ANY sort of assistance, because I'm scared of them and I don't particularly trust them.
