This article repeats the myth that filing a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flight plan makes a difference. Only people who have never actually filed a VFR flight plan themselves would believe that myth. A VFR flight plan is almost entirely a useless bureaucratic exercise, and most certainly does NOT pinpoint a crash site. Whatever tragedy befell Steve Fossett shouldn't be muddled in the news media by such misreporting. There are something like 600,000 pilots in this country. The Associated Press should hire some of them as news reporters.
