Bank savings deposits are insured, but I would imagine if banks went under, you'd have to fill out government forms and wait, who knows how long, to get your money in cash. So if you need your money for food or rent - the safe box at home might not be such a bad idea.

The trouble is, in the depression, people OWNED thier own land, often made thier own food, and were dependant upon one another to a point that we as modern, suburban and urban Americans would consider wierd and comunistic. Now days, your on your own, and you feel on your own too!
Where I used to live in Georgia, it was easy to get lost because all the corperations, long horns, Walmart, Target, Steak and Shake, Ruby Tuesdays, mcDonnalds, Payless, etc, all looked the same, and popped up every two miles! People claimed this brought jobs, but the work is draining, stripping pople of humanistic pride and apprechaition for living.... The communities die, and so what is left is asphalt.... It's a nightmare!
people say they are lving paycheck to paycheck, but you see tyhem and they're buying 14 dollar towels, dropping 40 bucks eating out, paying for flat screen, H.D. telivision and living in urban sprawl apprartments! You can't tell there is a depression.... at least not yet. Standing in the parking lot of Target at 10:00 at night, you'd swear everybody was happy just to spend and buy and never needed anything, save a movie to whore the images of yesteryear.
