Awesome that some of the firefighters had the opportunity to meet the President. And likewise, great that all the firefighters and emergency response personnel are acknowledged for their hard work.

Big thank you to all the firefighters, public service, and public safety personnel fighting the fires and assisting those who are displaced. It is a very strenuous task but fortunately your back up keeps coming and soon these fires will be contained. I pray that lives will continue to be spared and the conditions are favorable-

I drove from Redding to Eureka yesterday and saw all the so-called "firefighters" but none of them were fighting the fires. Indeed there were 4 or 5 dozen fires clearly visible and close to Highway 299 but no one puts them out. or has even tried to put them out for a month. That's because the Forest Service has a misbegotten "let it burn" policy in effect. Every do-nothing, non-producer in the Forest Service from the top down should be summarily fired because of gross mismanagemwent and incompetence in the handling of these fires. Their backfire fiascos are kindly kept out of print by cooperative newspapers but the dark underbelly is that the sob's often times start the backfires to burn out private landowners who they've been harassing for years. It's all politics and federal funds and all the lead hogs are already shoulder to shoulder three deep at the trough.
This morning I was watching unusual bird behavior and discussed this with some of my neighbors. The smoke is very harmful to birds who seem to have delicate respiratory systems comparatively, hence the canary in the coal mine. In my book if you want to burn it should be in October. We have a responsibility to put these fires out now and the Forest Service and every "firefighter" who willingly stands down is shirking their responsibility.

Quit being a hater skeptic. Who cares if the fire is continuing to burn by 299 when the priority should be the many homes that are threatened by this blaze. You mention that the time to burn is October, but "burning" in the sense you're talking about is from man-made fires. It's not like anybody can control lightning. As for the "backfire fiascos," you need to take at least a Basic 32 class before you decide you're the expert on fires. It's easy for the flying embers to cross a normal fire line, and that has been the case of fire lines cleared with bull dozers, and hand lines in these fires so far. Backburning is used to make a fire line that can't catch fire from these embers. As for the fire fighters not fighting fires, you only see them for the seconds that you drive by; that doesn't account for the many weeks that they've been trying to fix what mother nature did. If you don't think they're doing a good enough job, why don't you do something about it. I'd like to see you put forth as much effort of fighting these fires as you do running your mouth.

If I've come to hate the Forest Service it's not without great reasons.

The build up of fuel on the forest floor in the National Forest is a crisis. That is why the lightning has been so much more devastating than most can remember. That and backfires should only be used when you really know what you're doing. Here, that's clearly not the case, as it was the backfire that crossed the dozer line.

For your info, I fought my first fire in 1967 and recently put out one fire with a D-8 that was started by a "firefighter" but got out of control (as per usual) and onto our private land.

But my question is why the personal animosity. Can't anyone disagree with your own views? Sheesh.

I care. We've been living in unbearable smoke for a month. Elders will suffer this winter from respiratory illnesses. Skeptic is right. It's time to put out the fires. Hey Skeptic; Back in the late sixties and seventies I worked for the U.S. Forest Service. I worked for a resource officer who constantly foufgt the fire people about the need for periodical fires. On the other side in the fight were the timber and cattle industries who fought tooth and nail to put out every fire so they wouldnt loose one tree or blade of grass. They won the fight and today there is so much litter that when a fire does burn, we can't stop it and it kills everything.

The forest is for everyone, not just the cattle and ranching industries or the recreationalists or the eco freaks. There should be logging recreation, grazing etc.

We need the F.S. to manage the forests for the good of all groups and not just special interests.

The earth hippies are the reason California is burning. We are not allowed to clean our forests anymore. Cause we have to protect the endangered species. Well it turns out that this is not the best way to go about protecting the endagered species now is it? Besides that the forests are ment to burn. It was our decision to move into these heavely wooded areas. It needs to burn to get rid of all the diseased and beetle infested trees. Its called nature. The firefighters should only be protecting structures. Our forests are way to unhealthy and over growen. If we dont let it burn now it will be worse next time.
