How does someone go about running for Millstadt school board? How many seats are open in April and who is running so far?

If you are serious about this, don't you think you should call the school????

Is there a problem with the current board? I have attended a few board meetings. The school and students are doing wonderful. Why change it when it works?

I don't know of any problems but new ideas are always nice. I believe only 2 of the 4 members up for re election are running. Who would be good for the other two spots is my question. I was hoping for some genuine feedback not personal attacks. I don't even know who is running. As a taxpayer in Millstadt I would like to make an informed decision in April.

They usually hold a candidates forum a few weeks before the election. I have always made a point of attending. Unfortunately, very few voters do. It's a good way to hear them speak on important education topics. Sometimes they have a question and answer period. If not, the candidates usually hang around afterwards making themselves available to the public.

There are actually 7 people running for the 4 spots. I (Ryan Tucker) am one of them. I grew up in Millstadt and attended MCS from K-8th. I would like to become a board member so I can have a say in the future of MCS, especially since I have 2 young children in the school and several friends with children also in the school.

It is always good to have a good mix on the school board, new and veteran members. Board members should also have children in the system and not make it an avenue to hire your relatives or friends. Good luck!

Interesting perspective on needing to have children in the district to be on the board. I remember when I was in PTA many parents were always concerned about what their children's class or grade was to receive. This could happen on the board as well. Perhaps you need to inicrease clas sizes but the member is unwilling to if it effects their students grade. I do not think that having children in the school is that important. As long as you are involved in the school, know what's going on and understand the role of the Board you will most likely make a good board member.

It is very difficult to understand what is happening in the school without students in one or both schools. New ideas are always important! I beleive the two returning members have been on the board for 16 years or more. There is not doubt that it is be time for a change!
I know Ryan Tucker and Kurt Muskopf are running and both would be excellent for the School. The current PTA president, Gwen Riley and another PTA board member, Stacy Sommerfield are also running. These four canidates would bring new ideas to the school when they need it most. Losing Kirk Caponi will be a big loss to the District but it is very important to have the new members on the board if the district is going to move forward. Re-electing the same members for 16 years only brings the same stagnant ideas!!!!

Losing Kirk Caponi is a huge loss for the district. He has been a positive stable leader. Best wishes to him and his family!

I believe there is another forum for School Board candidates only. This will he held in the 26th. I attended the Columbus Club forum and I will be voting for Stacy Sommerfield, Gwen Riley, Ryan Tucker and Kurt Muskopf. The two incumbents started by saying they weren't sure if they were going to run and made their decision after Mentzer left but then went on to praise the new Superintendent . This tells me their really not vested. If he is so good, move on you did your job. One has been on the board for almost 16 years and one for 20. It is important to make a change. Vicki LePere can and will serve as the voice of reason and senior leadership on the Board. It's time for new, younger voices to be heard. Please get out and vote for new people to YOUR Board.

I echo support for four new members. Mr. Muskopf, Mr. Tucker, Mrs. Sommerfieldand and Mrs. Riley will learn quickly. Our district must make some cost saving measures to survive the inability of the State of Illinois to get its finances in order.

I have to comment that being a coworker of Stacey Sommerfield for over ten years she would be an asset to your school board. She is an amazing teacher, hard worker, good listener, and an all around good person. She would be an excellent resource and is knowledgable in all areas of the educational system.
