How can police be allowed to ticket people for not wearing seat belts when they don't wear them themselves?

Is not wearing a seat belt less dangerous when you're wearing a badge?

It's just another way for the state to raise money through tickets, next they will say you have to wear seatbelts when riding a motorcycle

If people don't want to wear seat belts that is more than fine with me. IMHO If you get killed in an accident because you

A) Got into a car with a driver that was drinking

or

B) didnt put your seat belt on, and were ejected from the vehicle during an accident

It is one more stupid person out of the gene pool.
I feel badly for innocent people that get involved in accidents. And the families left behind. Not the morons

We're cutting police officers, have drug and gang problems galores, robberies in broad daylight, carjackings, and the like, and we're now going to focus our efforts on seat belt use?

Any seat-belt law concerning adults IS definitely the gov't overstepping its authority. I don't believe the government's job is to save me from me. Adults should be able to decide such things for themselves. It is no different than cigarette smoking, in that regard.

I always wear a seat-belt because I value my life and recognize that wearing one can save it in case of an accident. If someone else decides otherwise for himself (or herself), that is fine with me...and it should be fine with the gov't, too.

Someone not wearing a seat-belt does not endanger anyone's life but their own. Until it can be proven otherwise, let them make that choice.

I work in an ER and I while I truly lecture my patients about not wearing seat belts, I don't think it should be compulsory. I have worked for years in Emergency Medicine, and I have seen people survive severe accidents, and have literally scraped people off the pavement for not wearing them when they were thrown from the car.

A major thing here is that back when the seat belt law was initially passed the useless, lying, back-stabbing, incompetent twits in Boston said that this would not be made compulsory. Is anyone really surprised that these boobs on Beacon Hill are going back on their word.

It's funny you said that....When my son was going for his driving test at the RMV, the cop didn't put on his seatbelt...My son repeatedly asked him to do so and he said no...He told the man that he would not start the car unless he put one on...The cop told him that if he didn't start the car and get going, he would fail him right there and then...Of course, he started the car...Why is it this guy didn't have to put one on? We are told that we are not suppose to start driving until all passengers are buckled up yet this guy thought he was above the law...They want us all to obey the laws of the road, then they should as well...

This is definately "overstepping" by the government. A mandatory seatbelt law is an infringement on the operators' rights, and any seatbelt law should be eliminated all together.

If we have police officers with the time to spare to drive around looking for people not wearing seat belts, then we need to lay off some police officers.

This is definitely a case of government overstepping its bounds, and any rep or senator that supports this bill should find themselves on the unemployment line come next election.

Then the answer is to crack down on state-funded healthcare and benefits, not hand over more of our personal freedoms to the nanny-state of Massachusetts. You want them to have cops follow us around so they can make sure we dont eat too much fast food? Or maybe they could force your yocal a** to go to the gym?

This is simply our corrupt Massachusetts politicians being bought off by the insurance companies yet again.

you cannot force people to take care of themselves by laws, it has to be in them to want to be careful, the records say some do not care about themselves or anyone else, laws will not change that.

The Feds will hold federal highway money over the heads of state government forcing them to pass a law. That is what they did for any state that wouldn't change the drinking age to 21. These laws are state laws, but, if they are not passed the Feds make you pay! So, all states pass the laws regardless of what the voters want.

The idiots died because they were driving like morons, not because of seatbelts! Next we will all be required to wear helmets during our waking hours just in case some fool gets stoned and kills themself falling down the stairs!!!!!!
