BRIDGEPORT -- It was a busy night for Dylan Vitti.

Police say the 20 year-old man, who is believed to be homeless, stole a bottle of wine from a bar, broke into a nearby apartment, threatened an ambulance crew and tried to escape from police-- all within a few hours Saturday night.

Officer Michael Salemme initially was called to a downtown bar at 5:45 p.m. where a bartender said a man, whom she wouldn't serve, came behind the bar, grabbed a $20 bottle of wine and ran off.

An hour later three officers were called to the scene of a burglary in progress at a Fairfield Avenue apartment building. A resident told police that he'd come home to find a man with facial piercings bloody and laying on his kitchen floor.

A window had been smashed and there was blood on the floor, police spokesman William Kaempffer said. The resident grabbed the man and threw him into the hallway, he said.

The description of the suspect, who fled the scene, matched that of the wine thief, Kaempffer said. The suspect, later identified as Dylan Vitti, later returned and was found on the fire escape of the Fairfield Avenue building. He was identified by the resident as the intruder and subsequently identified by an employee at the bar as the wine thief.

Vitti threatened the medics as he was being taken to the hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises, and he provided a variety of different names to police and medical staff. "After he was treated, Vitti tried to escape but only made it a few steps before an officer corralled him,'' the police spokesman said.

Vitti was charged with sixth-degree larceny, second-degree burglary, second-degree threatening, interfering with police and criminal attempt at escape from custody.
