It is interesting that this settlement occurs AFTER the sate announces intentions to close several of the psychiatric hospitals, with one just recently shut down. The state wants to 'get out of the mental health business'. So after promising the feds the best of care, they now want to chuck mental health placements onto the streets. They speak of community-based group homes, but these are virtually non-existent with none to open anytime soon. I hope that NAMI will take this info to the feds quickly and ensure this extremely needy part of our society that they will receive care. Without it you can expect the state to feel even more over-burdened in the prison system where many of thise unfortunate likely will end up. Please let your government representatives know that you see this need ans encourage them to give this issue the attention that it needs.
