This is a horrible loss of someone who sounds like a wonderful caring person.

I'm from Cleveland originally. The area where she was riding is a heavy urban traffic avenue. I wonder if Prospect Avenue even has a bike lane?

Unfortunately, according to the Cleveland paper, she was not wearing a bike helmet.

A tragedy.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions...no matter what her father may have done, it simply comes down to a father losing his daughter very tragically. A young woman with loads of vitality and passion is now gone. Let's show some much needed respect.

"beaver cleaver": thanks for expressing sympathy for Sylvia Bingham; unfortunately, she's beyond our sympathy at this point. But emphatically no sympathy for two people who have lost their only child? Who raised a glorious human being to brighten the lives of so many other people? It must be wonderful for you to have such a sense of Moral Rectitude, and I hope it keeps you warm at night: for my part, I wouldn't wish it on a sea slug.
eephus, warm indeed. george jackson is not forgotten.

What a piefight this is turning into! Pretty soon we will be like the 10th cent. BC Trojans and Achaeans, fighting over Sylvia's body to bring her panoply back to lay before our respective gods. Well, bring it on: the ILIAD has always been one of my favorite reads, and anything is better than the grief stupor I've been laboring under the last couple of days.

I just read up on this Stephan Bignham character. This guy is another van jones radical communist. He should be in prison. He was responsible for the deaths of 6 people. He smuggled a gun into the prison and gave it to a Black Panther who went on to kill fellow inmates and guards. Bingham then hid for 13 years. Then he got off. Hello, hiding for 13 years is an admission of guilt.
Seems reasonable that god is punishing this guy in other ways.
How sad - please know that you are letting everyone see how miserable and lonely you really are. The only child of a loving couple is struck down just as she's starting a life of her own, and all you can do is misrepresent the facts of an old case? it wasn't even appropriate reporting in the original article - your take is even more reprehensible. He didn't supply the gun; he justifiably feared for his life. In any case, his daughter was clearly a bright and shining star and a loved child of God.

And, since you bring up God - what would Jesus think about your post? Are you showing Christian love? Is it your job to judge others? Shame on you.

Good thing the MCBC is leading the charge on cycling awareness. Helps prevent such instances.

Stephan Bingham is a scumbag and murderer. Only reason he got off was because of STUPID, GUILTY WHITE LIBERAL Marin jurors!

"Stephen Bingham is from a prominent Connecticut family; his father was a judge and his grandfather, Hiram Bingham, had been a Connecticut governor and U.S. senator as well as the discoverer of the ancient ruins of Macchu Picchu in Peru."

In other words, just another liberal privileged east coast trust fund skumbag out here in California causing sh*t. Murderer!

Although I only had the privilege of admiring Sylvia from afar, the few times I came into contact with her revealed her as an incredibly smart, kindhearted and inspiring person. There's a reason she had such a following, both at TL and at Yale; she was one of those people whose articles you read or who you would glance at as she passed in the halls and you knew that she would go on to change people's lives. She will be missed.

You take great comfort in knowing that Bingham's daughter died in an accident? In other words, you're just another example of an angry hateful, spiteful conservative. There are only about 50 million of you bitter, whining misanthropes in this country.

Somehow I knew I would find the typical collection
of right wing scum spewing their unique brand
of ignorance here. Its all they have to offer.
However much you celebrate this tragic accident
realize this. You and your merry band of kool aid
drinkers are going to be out of power for many years
to come. You are going to have to learn to yell
and scream even louder. Its like swimming in quick
sand. the more you agitated you get the deeper
you sink and the more irrelevant you become.

On second thoughts, I think I'll just pick up my battered old Lattimore translation of Homer.
This is marginally less entertaining and edifying than going to the zoo to watch chimpanzees flinging excrement.

What's the deal with all the hatred for Stephen Bingham?

I too read up on his case. He was accused of smuggling a gun into SQ prison nearly 40 years ago. He went into hiding. Why? Because he feared for his life. If prison guards didn't get him, prisoners (black or white) would. Or so he thought.

He later stood trial and was acquitted. I suppose it's interesting that his family was in CT politics.

But honestly, why all the hate for bingham? Do you really think he had anything to do with the shootout? Why?

Have you considered alternative explanations?

Absolutely he had something to do with it... he smuggled the gun into the prison.

He is responsible for the death of sons, husbands, fathers. It is so painful to lose someone you love. It breaks my heart. Just because something happened 40 years ago - it doesn't lessen the severity of what he did. It makes me sick to see him so celebrated.

I wish he didn't do it.

It's unfortunate that his daughter was killed in a tragic accident. But it was just that, an accident. At least someone didn't set out to kill her or have her killed. That would be worse.
