I was literally run off the Times-News forums for keeping on all of this two years ago.

It is nice that he will be leaving office, however it will be vindication when he ends up serving a sentence behind bars.

This guy is nothing more than a hack, and a creep. ANY plea from the state should include at the least, his registry as a CHILD RAPIST, about a years worth of community service and NO less than a year in prison. I would like more time for him, but I am realistic.

Since they are talking about plea deals, he IS guilty. Otherwise, they would take it to trial.

Polk County folks? The electorate is just dumber than a box of rocks. David Satterfield had his issues ... but at least he didn't try to screw children. ALL of this was out there when the election happened ... and these idiots chose to ignore it.

Pathetic!

From the linked article:

"...Robert Dempsey said Abril was a friend to many in the community and had fallen prey to an unfair justice system.

“You can accuse anybody of anything, can't you?” he said.
=========

I'd say there is a track record in North Carolina of false sexual assault accusations, and isn't it true that the NC grand jury operates in total secrecy, without even a written record of what was said. It would be interesting to know how many cases the grand jury heard the day they heard this case. Would you be surprised to know that indictments get handed down after only a few minutes spent on each case. It seems like just a rubber stamp to what ever the DA wants.

Isn't it interesting that Dempsey calls our justice system unfair - as if everything the government does isn't FUBAR - especially justice! And, in North Carolina, the DA can skip a court hearing if he wants to play his cards close to the chest.

I do not believe that taking a plea bargain means guilt - Dempsey has a point. The system is bad when innocent people would rather take a plea to avoid the huge costs of a trial, and even after the costly trial it is not unheard of that an innocent man would be sent to prison.

I understand he has been accused, but I do not understand why you consider him to be guilty. Has he confessed?

Word to the wise: Keep it zipped - Pants and mouth. Being a female, mama and grandma, I fail to understand why some little children are hurt like this, and if this man is guilty, I fail to understand why he isn't shot like a rabid dog, since a rapist is that bad. A year in prison is not enough to pay for a wasted, tormented little child's life. I know all about the "innocent until proved guilty" but I don't think life in prison is enough, much less a year. There are plenty of prostitutes, if he wants intercourse. Maybe it's a power thing. A smart lawyer will get him off, I'm sure, which is a shame. I don't feel sorry for the wife, either. Why would she cry over a monster?

If he isn't guilty, why is he resigning?

My father taught me that a man would be known by his conduct through his whole life - a lesson I lesson I have found to be very true.
Most of us go through life without committing things that we are not proud of, harm others, or will come back to haunt us.
I am sorry for Mr. Abnet but a court of law will decide his guilt or incense. Its too bad that others have to suffer for his mis-givings.

FWIW, This story was buried by the ACT. Couldn't find it on their local stories page, much less the main page. Had to come to topix to find it and the comments.

I stand behind what I stated originally. Is the ACT backing off for some reason?

The man's life is ruined. I don't know what I would of done if I was ever accused of such. All I know is that a woman can cause a man a lot of grief. Some women can lie through their teeth and people will believe their lies is word up. Have experiance in that with my first ex. I have to give this man the benefit of the doubt of him being guilty of this.

BTW, there are certain jobs in which I cannot obtain because of the lie of a woman. I was accused of misdemeanor assault and battery by a woman, her knowing full well I did nothing of sort and the judge said I was guilty. A woman can be wicked. I can understand why this man did not want to take a chance with a trial.

Why resign, if he's not guilty?
Yes, there are often false accusations, but there are TOO MANY instances where it's the truth, and the children suffer.

Believe resigning from a job is better than being fired from it. Didn't want to take the chance I guess. Works both ways on the instances.

It is better to err on the side of the children. Far too many of them are dead inside from being raped by a perverted man, and often people (just like in this case) support the pervert instead of the child.

Keith, sorry fellow. On this one I strongly disagree with you.

You should have not picked a loser wife to sleep with in the first place. I know you are a good man and were wrongly accused. But still, you picked the sorry woman to bed down with.

And Polk county should not have elected this man to office when there was so much evidence that he is a pervert.

I am guessing a few women voters thought he was 'cute' and covinced a few others that the children were lying.

Oh well. He WILL get what is coming to him. He will spend eternity in the lake of fire... and so will those who truly don't seem to care about those children. Like the judge. And the lawyer. and the voters in Polk County.

You don't know how a person will turn out to be as with my first wife. She was a sweet a person you could ever meet when we got married. Don't know why she turned after 7 years of marriage. It wasn't only my loser wife who accused me of something I did not do. But that is water under the bridge and nothing I can do about it. As for this man, you have the right to your opinion and I have mine.

BTW, I walked in this man's footsteps as being accused of improperly touching a child by the child. After the investigation, naturally the child was found out to lie, I was vindicated. So, yes, I have strong doubts when this type situation is brought about as just being the word of the accuser. I guess I am a low life sex offender and should spend some time with Bubba and have to register just because of a persons accuseation.

On my post #8, I mean I don't know what I would of done if I was arrested because of the allegation of the child as what happened with this man.

To reep full RETIREMENT BENEFITS. Don't you just love how the NC Judicial System works?. EQUALITY OF THE LAWS IN NC ARE A JOKE. It is up to us to put revised Laws in place to protect us against them.
