it's a six year old child and the child's parents don't want to press charges. They shouldn't have a choice.Yes it was accidental but fireworks are illegal and the act of throwing them in a barnfire near people was irresponsible.

What's really wrong with it was that the fireworks kept going on for another half hour and everyone else on the beach was oblivious to what was going on. When the police finally had the girl rushed off to the hospital and started coming around to end the fireworks (mostly being set off by people who had been on the beach drinking since noon) everyone started complaining that the police were ruining their holiday. No one was aware of the poor little girl who was injured just a few feet away. Fireworks were going off in all different directions last night. One landed just a few feet from my daughter, and we were way in the back...

An arrest here is forthcoming, the fact that the parents don't want to "press charges" is irrelevant.

ok, so if the mayor acknowledges that illegal fireworks are a tradition in the town, then why didn't she do anything to stop them. if it were my child, i would be going after the kid who threw them in the fire and the mayor for allowing this illegal celebration. i wonder if the tradition in bayville will continue next year.

Illegal fireworks were in my neighborhood last night with people setting up elaborate firework displays in the street. The cops drove right through the crowd and kept on going! The fireworks went on until after 11pm last night with a bunch of drunks sitting in lawn chairs on the street right on top of the launching area! It's amazing more people are not hurt or killed on the Fourth of July.
Hopefully the little girl will be fine and they will only attend legal fireworks shows from now on.

Absolutely right!

The child's memories of the 4th will be scarred for life, and she may be too. The child is entitled to compensation, and I hope it's enough to get some adult minds to start functioning.

This crap happens when the Gov't makes everything illegal. Kids get their hands on this stuff, don't know how to handle, do something stupid and here you go.
If they were legal, these kids would not have secretly tossed them in a bonfire. They would be sitting at the beach shooting them properly toward the water.

AND if they hurt themselves, then that would be a lesson. no one inoccent would have gotten hurt

Do you know anything about burns? Certain areas are considered more severios than others. Considering the location, "only first degree" on a child is significant.

The cops do nothing about fireworks. It was like a war was going on in my area.I go to work at 2:30 AM. Try sleeping.I called the cops 2 times. They didn't even drive by.But they can send 7 cop cars to my house for me arguing with my son in the middle of an afternoon.7 cars ,can you believe that.I have respect for the police, but only when they do thier job correctly.

Bayville is a great place and having our July Forth fireworks is our right. The mayor is a big supporter and has always been behind us and thats why we votes for her. She will always be on our side and knows we needs to have a little intertainment and thats why she tells the cops not to go after the fireworks - good work!

Fireworks should be legaled. If yous would let people do what they need then no one would be doin bad stuff - only good shows and a few beers. Its the stupid poor people who dont no no better whos are all doin the dumb ass moves. The mayor is a great person for bein on our side and keepin the cops out of our private areas like fireworks and a little partyin. Its all the collge crowed that wants us shut down cuz they are thinkin superior to us and all. Bless our mayor and we will always votes for them.
