Oh My Goodness...a parents worst nightmare!! Every vehicle should have back up sensors built in. This tragedy could happen to anyone! I hope she is ok.

My youngest has a Prius with a built-in GPS that is also a backup camera like thing. All cars should have one of those. If only they were more affordable ( sigh) I do hope the child will be okay.

one of my worst fears; I never moved the car without knowing my kids were in their seatbelts or seeing them wave at me from the inside window.

scary...sure hope this young girl recovers

Is it me or does this happen more often than not? It's very sad and seems to be so preventable...

I can totally see how this happens. The kids don't understand blind spots and that they are so little you can't see them behind the car when you are in the drivers seat (pets too).

You can walk around the car 46 times, but a child running after a ball or a toy or a pet just doesn't understand.

God bless and I hope the whole family is OK.

NO!
Every vehicle doesn't need a back up sensor.
Everybody behind the steering wheel of the vehicle needs to know there surroundings!

Thats why i have to watch kids 24/7.... the little one must have run in the back of the SUV..........people try pulling in your driveway or anywhere... its safer when you can just drive out....

even parking lots such as market basket/shopping plaza... find a spot and back in or pull thru so you don't rish hitting anyone..........

I hope the child makes it.....

Are you kidding me. This father has to live with this the rest of his life. Empathize with the guy for a minute.
Hope she recovers

Its the size of the vehicles I think. It's unlikely this kid was sitting down in the driveway and he just went over her. She probably did run out behind him. In a car, that's more avoidable. In a Soccer Tank, it's not.

I used to occasionally borrow a Grand Cherokee, which isn't even that big. In a parking lot, the rear window in even that thing is so high that you cannot see through your rear view where the cars in the row behind you are, never mind a small child. Side mirrors don't cover that spot right behind you either.

For that reason, I don't disagree with backup sensors, or maybe a camera, in the back of vehicles with rear windows over X feet off the ground. But the real issue is how many people driving these things actually need one?
