If its meaning can be misconstrued by anyone it should be rewritten so everyone gets the same meaning in the same way. The person picked a bad choice in words to put on a church sign for the general public to read and I personally think their communication skills are questionable.
Thanks scooter. You always seem to be a voice of reason whether you totally agree or not. I hope people realize I really wasn't trying to bash the church. Just the bad judgement and wording of the offensive sign

What you don't understand is that only in YOUR mind was the sign offensive!

Are you still here, dang. Im sure he wasnt the only one, looks like he was trying to protect the church. Then people like you get on here and talk about what the sign meant to others. If he found it offensive so be it, if you dont.....ok. To each his own!

Go back and read my post again. If anyone can find any other meaning in the message other than the intended meaning, the message looses its effectiveness. The words chosen were a poor choice. The person should have taken a different approach to get their meaning across. The person who put it up there should be able to admit their mistake. Everyone makes mistakes.

The person who put up the sign had made no mistake. The person who is making something out of what the sign says is wrong. I don't know if they are just that dumb or if they just have a crue andl vindictive mind, but God knows and He will judge!

Please feel free to quote anything I've said that was "cruel or vindictive" no really....quote it. There was nothing, because I am not. You saying so proves who the "dumb" one is.

I do understand both sides of the argument. However, any time you can get two opposite meanings from one message and you could have reworded your message so everyone reading it gets the same meaning out of it, why not rewrite it. You need a more audience centered approach when you are writing something for the general public to read. You need to consider things like perception and the fact that not everybody thinks alike. If this message was going inside the church for only church members to read it might have come across differently. It was simply a bad choice of words.

Church signs are most often written to get our attention and many times they use alliteration, metaphors, or other poetic examples to make people think about what is being said.If the sign had merely said,"a person's words can destroy another human being." very few people would have even noticed or remembered reading it, but stating the dsme message in a different way than in ordinary terms, it St least got your attention and who knows how many other people have contemplated the intndef message. Jesus was the greatest teacher who ever walked the earth and He often taught using parables.

I noticed the sign a few weeks ago, with a different message that I thought was clever, but a little edgy. Maybe they need to run those sayings by a committee before posting them, instead of letting one single, clever, mind have free reign.

You made my point. People WILL remember that message bc they used clever wording. But SOME people will remember it in a bad way.

I believe that since a church is a nonprofit organization, they can state their beliefs however they choose. I Aldo feel that the head of that organization, who is usually the pastor, can make the decision how he will express messages. " Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths; their words cut like swords." Psalm 59:7. So my advise to you is think about your words and choose kind words and thoughts because what comes from your mouth begins in your heart.

<quoted text>You started this to get attention. If the sign really causes you concern, call the church or whoever put that on their sign. You are hoping to cause problems and that is doing the work of the devil. Do the right thing and apologize to the church and pull this thread. Good grif....be an adult.
How does that make the poster an adult? Besides, "maturity" is highly subjective.

Wonder why the pastor didn't just put Psalm 59:7 up there. It comes across better. No one is saying anything about what the church has the right to do or not to do. The conversation is about how the meaning can be taken in two different ways and how the person who put those words on the sign might have benefited from advise like, "Think about your words", before posting.

I totally agree with "just dont understand". While I the understand the message the church wants to get out, I also understand that the majority of folks would contruse it to have other meanings. The church needs to rephrase the wording on the sign. You can sign me.......just another good Baptist from another churh.

So sorry for what one person who evidently had malice in her heart can do to am entire congregation. I wish only the best for everyone who suffered over this. The person who started this should do the right thing and have the thread pulled. God Bless you and your church.

That's fair. I honestly couldn't figure out what the "godly" meaning was.
