I hope the town and Mayor are reading this but that is the most ridiculous "law" i think i've ever heard of. I live in a place where kids, including mine, can sell lemonade without getting in trouble with the law. Lemonade stands have been around forever and I'm sure most of our parents had one at some point in their lives. I guess I'm glad I don't live in this town where kids can't be kids..

This is the most asinine thing I have ever read. The police are such idiots. Go back in time when kids had lemonade stands. Having them shut down for lack of a permit would not have been tolerated! What kind of moronic country have we become? The police didn't know who made it or what was in it? What jerks!

I thought the local police chief must be a real moron and then I read his comments and that thought was confirmed. What happened to common sense? Good grief!

This is a sad day for the people of Georgia and more so for the people of Midway. The police chief's line of reasoning was beyond belief but then it goes in line with today's law enforcement thinking which is no thinking as we are hearing and seeing on TV more and more. You can rely on these types of police officers to enforce the law no matter who or whatever rights are left to trample. It reminds me of the old films that I've seen of some places in Europe a few years ago. You can claim that there can be no exceptions but remember that laws that trample on the rights of citizens just need unthinking and uncaring drones to enforce them and then just claim that they were doing what was ordered. Seems I'm sadly hearing that defense more and more from law enforcement. I hope the people of Midway remember this come election time and exercise what rights they have left in this town.$50 a day to permit a lemonade stand? I'm sure that this isn't the town that Dukes of Hazzard was based on and I'm sure this isn't the type of town its citizens are proud of right now. The Mayor and Chief of Police of Midway need to be visiting it's littlest entrepeneurial citizens with an apology. This is a day that the people of Midway need to hang their heads in shame or maybe standing up in outrage.

Hey Chief,
So while the local Meth lab is up and running, you turn into the lemonade police? Were these young hooligans armed? Were you hurt? Better watch out for those gangs disguised as fund raising school kids having a car wash. And those dangerous Girl Scouts. Who knows what they are really selling. Hopefully you will be shamed out of town.

I'll bet the police chief a dollar. they will only be in business/(sorry bad choice of words) one day, heck it was all they needed. a beat the heat community service for old people,(which when you are 12 is pretty much everybody)

Midway City Council needs to meet in emergency session tonight! The agenda should include Firing the Police Chief, repealing the Lemonade Stand tariff, drafting an apolpgy to the 3 young ladies (who were not begging their parent for money to go to the waterpark, but actually trying to earn it) and find someway to send these girls to the waterpark as guests of the town of Midway. In addition, the 2 officers need to go through sensitivity training. They are probably the 2 biggest bullies in town.
You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Children of Midway, Revolt! Everyone of you should open a stand in front of your house...sell homemade cookies, lemonade, Coca Cola, pies...what ever. Your town is famous for Revolutionaries (Buttons Guinette and others) Just let those Red Coats try to shut all of you down!
Good luck...come to McKinney, TX...there is a lemonade stand on every corner (except when it's over 102!)

Really,
What kind of world are we living in? What kind of world did you grow up in? I remember an old preacher once told me, God gave us 10 commandments, and we have extracted 25,000,000 laws and ordinances from those 10 commandments. There have been several other lemonade stand incidences this year, both of which garnered very unfavorable national attention. I'll bet this summer there are 100,000s of lemonade stands across our fair country. One even down the street run by neighbor kids we've known all their lives. The unwelcome publicity this does to beautiful Midway will stick in people's craws for a long, long time. It has oft been quoted, Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life. Community is about life. Me thinks a little more wisdom is called for.

But back to this public scourge. Think about it. No one complained they were being poisoned. Restaurants didn't claim these girls had an unfair advantage. Neighbors were not up in arms about some violation of a zoning ordinance.

I'm glad to hear the crime rate in beautiful Midway is so low that this is what takes up the officer's time, and sucks up the taxpayers dollars. But frankly, Sheriff Andy Taylor would never have even thought about spoiling a kids trip to the water park. In retrospect and I'll bet you're feeling it now in the midst of your own little PR disaster, the officers should have risked their own lives by purchasing several cups of lemonade (save your receipts) and consumed them. They could have saved countless lives. Wow!, What a way to take a bullet for the community.

And yes, in The Andy Griffith Show - "The Merchant of Mayberry", even little Opie opens a lemonade stand for 2 cents a cup on Crowley's vacant lot. Geez Opie, trespassing, selling without the proper permits, no inspection by the the USDA and FDA, a non-approved or permitted structure. No food handlers permits. Violation of the signage ordinances. Opie is in for a mess-o-trouble. I wouldn't even take any chances. Best to TAZE him and drop him like a wounded water buffalo before cuffing him. Bail should appropriately be set at $100,000 as well as to paying restitution to the officers (those receipts) and court costs after he is found guilty on all charges. Best to nip this in the bud! Lemonade stands are considered gateways into drugs, gambling and prostitution. Yes my friends, trouble with a capital "T" that rhymes with "P" and that stands for......Lemonade?

This is hideous!!!! As for the police chief not sure about what was in the lemonade- I guess she's not too handy around the kitchen. I'll help the moron out: Lemon juice, water, sugar. Stir. Add ice. Go ahead and write it down if you can't remember.

Is there a Wal-Mart greeter job available in the area for you?(No offense to greeters!) It will keep me up nights knowing that an idiot like you is on patrol.

Maybe your friends & neighbors could do what people in Lewiston, Idaho did when the police shut down a pumpkin sale by two small children in their front yard last October. What a terrible crime they committed, not having a permit! Such a crime made the front page of the Lewiston Morning Tribune..with a large picture of the two criminals & thier home grown contriban.
The very next day more than 80 people showed up to knock at their door & ask if they could make a donation. As they left, each took a pumpkin from the front porch.
The powers that be soon relented, and the children's father was running to the store just to keep up with the crowd of persons wanting to to make thier point . Over 170 pumpkins were given away in 3 days....FORA LITTLE DONATION!

On that same table there needs to be a DONATION can. People do not need a permit to donate and I'm sure they will.Just one thing girls try not to loose respect for your police dept.because of one person that has no common sense.

This just goes to show that rather than be part of the community and deal with real crimes, the police are showing their true job: revenue officers. They are their to make sure the city gets their "cut" of these girls business approach to raising their funds. The revenue officers have spoken: If you can't give us our cut, then you won't get yours.

To serve and to protect...the city budget.
