Heard a large bang and woke to see this around the corner (about 5:50 AM), not sure of any injuries or the circumstances. The Jeep SUV was completely rolled over and someone was trapped. Midlothian FD was working hard to get whoever was trapped out. I asked one person, and they "said the Jeep was seen traveling at a very high rate of speed."

That explains the sirens and such I was hearing. I didn't hear the initial bang, but I was having trouble sleeping so I heard all the sirens arriving (in several spurts), and my dogs went a little nuts.

Was anyone hurt?

An 18-year-old Midlothian man died and two other people who fled the scene were injured when their car struck a tree and burst into flames Wednesday night in the southern suburb.

Stephen Hayes of 14535 S. Karlov Ave. in Midlothian was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. Thursday at the Stein Institute, according to a Cook County Medical Examiner's office spokesman, who said the body was "charred."

Midlothian police and firefighters responded at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of 147th Street and Homan Avenue to reports of an accident with injury, according to Midlothian Fire Chief William Sheehy.

When crews got there, they found a red Pontiac Firebird "fully involved" in flames. The car was traveling in an unknown direction on 147th Street when it struck and veered off a tree, burst into flames and came to rest on the south side of 147th Street just west of Homan with "heavy driver-side damage," Sheehy said.

Investigators believe the car burst into flames when the fuel line ruptured upon impact with the tree.

Two other occupants of the Firebird fled the scene, leaving Hayes trapped in the vehicle, according to a release from Midlothian police. The driver of the vehicle, a juvenile, was located and taken to a nearby hospital, while the third passenger was found receiving treatment in the emergency room of another local hospital.

A fire lieutenant suffered "minor facial burns'' when he made an attempt to remove Hayes from the car "but was driven back by heat and flames,'' Sheehy said. Responding police officers also tried unsuccessfully to extricate Hayes, the release said.

A silver Ford van was also found on the scene and was involved in the accident. The van had several unidentified passengers, but no one was apparently injured. The driver, Salvadore Cheversia, 19, of Blue Island, is assisting police in the investigation, the release said.

No charges had been filed as of late Thursday morning as the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team investigates the incident.

A 30 second video showing the Midlothian Fire Department working hard to get the driver out of the Jeep, you can see both tires laying in the street.

Its not even summer and the trolls are starting....He probably was away at lunch. He has not released anything for quite a long time, seems like he has a designated spokeswomen now. many times that person has nothing to say. I for one would like to know if this person had a medical condition (do not need the name of the person or the condition) or if we had someone impaired driving over 50 MPH down a side street that could have killed someone, especially that close to a park.
