Four years ago appeared to be the dawning of a new day in our village. Terry Stephens was sworn in as mayor, and the excitement around town was unprecedented. Just a few weeks prior he had been swept into office by the most lopsided vote margin in the history of Midlothian.

How did he accomplish this? He assembled the greatest campaign following one could have ever imagined. Young and old; male and female; black, white, and Hispanic; longtime friends and former political adversaries. As diverse as this group was, they had one common goal - Renew the Pride.

This excitement was perhaps best captured in a front page photograph in the Daily Southtown the Sunday after Terry was sworn in. An overflow crowd in our village chambers gave him a standing ovation after he took his oath of office, with the exception of three or four men in the back of the room - old Independent Party stalwarts who sat and sulked as the rest of the town celebrated. However, Terry misunderstood what all the excitement was about. It became apparent, over time, that he thought the mandate was more about him and his popularity, and not a call for change.

Upon assuming office he made no changes in the management team which had been assembled by his predecessor. In fact, he made bold and inexplicable moves to protect these people. The promises he made during his campaign carried little weight in decision making within his administration. He gradually began to push away those who were closest to him during his election campaign. Me personally, I was kicked to the curb after dedicating hundreds of hours of selfless work in the effort to get Terry elected and later to pass the Home-Rule referendum. And this past election, he turned his back on his former independent running mates Karen Kreis and Jerry Gillis. Instead, he chose to slip back into his old Independent Party comfort-zone; even embracing those who sat and sulked as he was sworn in.

I was not involved in this past election but I am cautiously optimistic in the hopes a new mayor may bring. This may be Midlothian's last, best chance, to turn things around. Sharon Rybak has a lot of listening and learning to do. If she and her administration are to be successful she cannot make the mistakes that Terry made. She cannot be too self-assured. She must remember that we are given one mouth and two ears for a reason - to listen! Listen to the people and listen to your trustees.

In his retirement, I wish Terry Stephens the best. Despite the wedge driven between him and I these past couple of years, my heart actually went out to him on election night. From a human standpoint, how could I not be sympathetic? Here is a man who four years ago had the dream of a lifetime come true. He had a mandate to govern. A powerful network of supporters in town and around the southland. Yet somehow, for reasons no one will ever be able to fully understand, it was all fumbled away.

I wish the elected officials of my old hometown the best as they move ahead. Midlothian is the Community that Pride Built and I believe it still has great potential. I pray and hope that you all are successful as you lay the foundation for the future of this great village.

I agree. I sat out this election. I did vote but I did not promote anyone. I was not happy with certain things but I was not comfortable with Sharon. Change just to change is not always the best option. I believe that Terry DID do what he thought was best for Midlothian, however he just wasn't able to close the deal so to speak. Does Sharon have what it takes? Time will tell. Her past history of hiring family and close friends is something to watch. Say Hi to the family for me.

Rather optimistic of you two to think he did his best. If that was his best I'd hate to see his worst.

I don't fault him nearly as much for the lack of new business as I do for his keeping on a terrible staff that leaks confidential information and commits countless blunders..And this is what we KNOW about. What we don't know is probably even more damaging.

Prepare yourselves people because Sharon takes office a lot of crap is going to come out. I can feel it. She isn't part of the last 20 years of the regime, and whether intentionally or just by accident from asking the questions any green mayor would have, she is about to get a rude awakening.

Terry may be a great guy when it comes to being a friend (though even this I'm hard pressed to believe based on what happened with you Mr.Invisible and a few others), but he was a lousy, one hit wonder mayor.

I certainly wish him well from a personal standpoint though. He deserves a good and happy life, but I hope he decides to stay out of politics now. I don't see the people's faith being renewed in him. I know it can't be for me.

Is that because it back fired in your face so bad last time? You and the rest of the topix posters ran and hid for the last year, couldn't admit you made a mistake. FYI posting on topix is not campaigning. You come on here just to gossip.

So you didn't want to say who you were voting for this time because of fear of it being thrown in your face like list time correct?

It's none of your business. And I don't "fear" anything. I'm in the kitchen a lot os, I can take the heat. You seem to be the one who can't get over things. Also, if you can UNDERSTAND and COMPREHEND the postings, Terry lost a lot of support within a few months after the Election. Call it what you want but a lot of his OLD supporters felt it was a "mistake" to reelect him. So, he did it to himself.

That's true! I heard that even people in his own party did not vote for him.
Mr. Invisible, you are much more gracious than I would be if I were you. Kudos sir.

Or do you play around on topic at work instead of working? How would you like it if the people working at the village did that?

I work all the time. My job is just as my hours can change and this week I happen to be on Vacation. You get that when you work. Actually, I get 5 weeks a year and with my Personal time and Vaca time, it averages about 10 weeks a year. It's called many years service.
