Just some points to consider when analyzing this:
1. Dan McGrath and his secretary have been employees for only about 8 months. Many employers do not grant COLA raises (if thats what this is) to employees with less than 12 months service.
2. James Lang has also been an employee for less than a year. He was hired part time in May for about $55k, given a full-time promotion and raise to $85k in September, then given another raise to $105k just a few weeks ago. Why does he too need, or deserve, another raise at this point?
3. The mayor said this raise would be keeping in line with the raises given to the union employees. I've read countless articles in the past few years where municipalities were only giving their police and fire fighters between 1.5% and 2.5% due to the difficult economy. Why do our union employees get double the going rate in this economy? Who negotiated those contracts? Were they approved by the village board, especially the two gransstanders who voted "no" last Wednesday on these newest raises?
Its time the residents wake up! Posting on Topix is great, but it's not enough. Everyone who has voiced their displeasure on here should share a link to this thread and a link to the news article with every friend of theirs who lives here in town. We must start spreading the word about this nonsense.
These raises were given because Midlothian has the lowest paying Police Departments and Fire Departments. The Police Department continually loses talent for greener pastuers like Tinley Park, Orland Park and New lenox. Why would you work for Midlothian when you can make $20-$40K more a year working over there. Midlothian hires good, college educated police officers, send them to the academy(tax payers pay for this and his salary) he comes back to train for 4-6 months and then Orland Park and Tinley Park scoop them up and say "Thank You Midlothian for flipping the bill" offer them a job and dont have to pay to train them.
So you do the math citizens???? Eventually Midlothian Police Department will lose all good talent and will be no different than Robbins PD. Midlothian officers also bring in some extraordinary amount of money to the city through their hard work. Look it up.
You think your property values have dropped??? Treat your most important asset like a second class citizen and see what happens.
Crime will go up and revenue will go down. The Police and Fire Departments in Midlothian just dont get paid enough compared to other surrounding towns.

There is no one here who wouldn't give our men in blue or fire fighters a raise .The thing we question is all the others who received it.But thanks for letting us know the hiring process very interesting indeed.

Just my opinion, as "R u kidding me" stated, this is about non-union workers not PD or FD workers. I'm sure that could be debated too, but the point here is giving across the board raises to brand new employees as well as experienced ones that have continually made mistakes. And calling them COLAs but giving more than the going COLA rate just because that's the rate the unions negotiated.

I'm all for the PD and FD raises they are more than worth it and then some. PW i don't know when i see 3 guys working on removing a tree and one is texting on his phone - is the third guy really necessary?

The office and lawyer - I beg to differ. I am sorry but when the village voted to raise the taxes - I think we just wrote them an open ended check to do what they please, as we have seen with the hiring of the lawyer and his secretary. Sad Sad Sad

I see you are having problems with raises for village employees. We just gave our city employees in Highland a 4% raise without a cost to the taxpayers. The council did not grant themselves this raise however. Here is how this was accomplished. We have a water tower on route 41, a sign company is erecting a new lighted sign on it. The monthly rental will cover the wage increase. In these trying times, cities and towns must figure ways to generate more monies from transactions such as this. Think this over and offer your town board some ideas. In my opinion, I believe we will see harder times very shortly before things correct themselves. Have a nice day.

You cannot call crestwood cops police officers. We are talking about real police departments. Yes, i heard they get paid like minimum wage, but all these guys have real full time jobs.the problem is you have a bunch of guys there who were never cut out to be real full time police officers so they dont mind to work for minimum wage just to have a badge and live out there dream. "REALLY SCARY" Unqualified wannabee pseudo cops.
So You are right, Crestwood has the lowest paying cops but you cannot compare crestwood with any police dept. Compare real fulltime police departments with other full time police departments.

I call BS on everything you said Just My Opinion. What a typical "cop out" response! First, Midlothian is not the lowest paid, they make a decent, blue collar, civil servant's wage. I know this for a fact, because working for the fire dept of an almost identical make up, we use Midlothian as a comparable during our contract talks. And let me tell you, for the work they do and how "busy" they are, they are well compensated. Oh and by the way, they are gonna receive 4.5% for the next couple years! My raises for the next couple: 2.25%! Second, people aren't just coming to Midlothian to get all their training and education paid for and skipping town. Dept's like Orland aren't stealing them away. As for the FD in places such as Orland, they are paid more because they are paramedics also. Our guys don't even transport you to the hospital!!! Midlo is missing out on a lot of money by not being paramedics and transporting! If you have an opportunity to make more money for the almost the same job, wouldn't you? And do these guys get hired in Midlo with the sole intention of leaving? No, they're happy to have a job! But if opportunity knocks... Lastly, I am all for civil servants making a good and decent wage, but not a lavish wage increase at a time when people are being taxed right out of their homes. That's what people are upset about, we voted yes to a referendum that raised our property taxes to "maintain" our staffing levels so "public safety" wouldn't be put in "jeopardy," then turned around and read about 4.5% raises being handed out!!! Are you kidding me?? Well you're right about this town eventually looking like Robbins. When everyone forecloses on their homes because they can't afford the taxes to overpay public employees, crime will spike and vacant homes will get torched! The raises are completely fiscally irresponsible for a Village with a deficit. Period.

Karen is up for reelection this time, along with Terry Jerry & Moe. Terry has already made it obvious that him and Moe do not want Karen to run again.

If you look into things that happen in our little town you will see that all the Grants that exist now and in the past are because of Karen Kreis. She is the person that researchs, applies and works with the grant committee she is the person who keeps the residents informed. Karen does all of this on her own time.

Karen has been doing this for the residents of the town, and when she voted against the recent raises and Terry and Vince and Moe treated her the way that they did during the village meeting. Maybe it is time to break up the boys club and get rid of the three stooges that want to run the village into the ground.

One police officer went to Orland, one went to Grundy County. Right after they finished with their training. Maybe it doesn't happen in the FD but the PD has problems with training people and then them leaving. So if they had to have increases in order to compete and they got them without offering the FD the same I'm guessing there would have been a problem with that.
You're probably right in what you say about the FD but that's just not the whole story.
